BUTTER MY BISCUITS and Fry some Chicken, this book is hotter than a cat on a hot tin roof!
By Stacy & Matt, the Paleo Parents
I think our foreword says it all...

Y’all listen up now. If you’re not already in love with Jennifer’s food, her welcoming smile, and southern charm – well then, bless your heart because I’m here to tell you it’s time! I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jennifer for years, and loving her food for almost as long! As a friend with experience writing cookbooks, I had the good fortune of talking with Jen as she worked busy as a cat on a hot tin roof pulling this book together. But even knowing all that went into it along the way, I was blown away from the end result.

After our own experiences running our blog and writing several cookbooks, we know first-hand how difficult it is to recreate recipes that people associate with memories, classics passed down generation after generation. Navigating social situation can be impossible and failure to succeed inevitable without the right tools in your arsenal. That’s where Down South Paleo is such a gift! With these recipes, Jennifer has accomplished something I could never – each recipe will bring back a flood of memories with its traditional southern flavors and textures, without the gluten, dairy, or processed junk.

As I sat with Jennifer and her family, over a meal we both cooked entirely from Down South Paleo, her passion and love for her craft rang loud and true. She made this book for those of us who have longed for the classics she loved to eat before her own health journey drove her to find healthier alternatives. She cooks from the heart, a place where only the best recipes are created. After trying out many of the recipes from this book, I can assure you that all of the recipes are not only fantastic, but also manage to be classic, traditional, and true to their culture, as well as innovative in their approach to using healthier ingredients!

My maternal family is all from the south; my grandmother was using a coffee tin in the freezer to store her bacon grease before the paleo community said it was cool. My entire youth I grew up with my mother’s renditions of southern favorites, like sausage & gravy (those true southerners know why it’s called SOS), enchiladas, and pecan pie. Some of those family recipes are classics I have never dared to recreate, for fear of my grandmother rolling over in her grave. But now I don’t have to, because Jen has perfected them all!

I’d be happy to bring any one of them to a gathering with family or friends! In fact, Jen has personally brought a number of these recipes to potlucks and parties that I have attended, and they are always the first to go and the item the whole crowd is talking about. If you want to prove to people that paleo foods can be delicious as well as nutritious, and that no one needs to let go of their comfort food culture, then Down South Paleo is the cookbook you’ve been waiting for.

If you’re like me, you’ll be amazed at the variety of delicious southern classics you’ll find in Down South Paleo. The moment I saw the book for the first time, I was in awe. Right after I wiped the drool off of my chin from the beautifully photographed food, I starting combing through and marking page after page of recipes I needed to try. From classic southern favorites like Mama’s Fried Chicken, Grandma’s Grain-Free Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, Lemon Pepper Fried Okra, and Chocolate Chip Georgia Pecan Pie to fun and flavorful regional classics like Bourbon Street Bread Pudding and Caramel Sauce, New Orleans’ Café Au Lait, Texas Grilled Rib Eyes, and the ah-maze-ing Paleo Chicken Chimichangas (my personal favorite) – everything sets my taste buds on full excitement mode.

For those of you with food intolerances beyond just gluten-free, Down South Paleo also offers something special you won’t find in most Paleo cookbooks. With each recipe marked to reflect when it is free of the top allergens, you’ll know exactly if a recipe is for you at a quick glance. As someone with multiple food intolerances, including nightshades such as tomatoes and chilies, I was amazed that I was able to eat a full Mexican-inspired meal from Down South Paleo and still meet my dietary restrictions. Finding recipes that still deliver on flavor and texture when basic paleo ingredients aren’t involved (such as nuts, eggs, nightshades) is quite a feat that says a lot about the superb quality of these well-tested recipes!

I hope that you, too, will be reminded of loving, comforting memories with the foods you enjoy from Down South Paleo. I recommend curling up with a cup of Naturally Sweetened Sweet Tea and reading the entire book cover to cover. You’ll find stories to warm your heart and recipes to whet your appetite, so make sure you’ve got pen and paper handy – you’re going to want to write down a list of recipes to try! – Stacy Toth

Worth every penny (even though it's budget-priced)
By Russ Crandall
My first note is the sheer value of Down South Paleo in terms of your wallet. The book contains over 100 recipes (over 120 if you count the sub-recipes - dressing to go with salads, gravies, etc), and all of them are keepers. To give you some perspective, this book costs less than a trip to Waffle House (unless you are just getting hash browns - no judgement there). There's something to be said about that fact.

The book contains exactly what you'd expect in a Southern-themed cookbook: Southern recipes! Jennifer doesn't try to reinvent the essence of Southern cooking in this book, but rather gives readers what they want - delicious dishes that are allergen-friendly while replicating familiar flavors. If you've been missing Chicken and Waffles, Crawfish Etouffee, Jambalaya, Gumbo, or Chicken and Dumplings, she's got you covered. Heck, there's even a grain-free grits recipe in here.

Speaking of allergen-friendly, there are a lot of options for folks with specific dietary restrictions. All of the recipes are dairy-free and gluten/grain-free, and 3/4 of them are nut-free. Additionally, 2/3 of them are egg-free and nightshade-free, and about 1/2 of them are AIP-adaptable with some simple tweaks. I appreciate that Jennifer really takes it to heart that *anyone* can potentially enjoy this book.

I like the fact that the chapters are separated by course, because it fits well for the book: breakfast, mains, sides, salads, finger foods, sweets, and drinks. Even the drinks are appropriate: favorites include the New Orleans Cafe Au Lait (made with coffe, chicory root, and coconut milk) and Lip Smackin' Lemonade (with added gelatin for extra nutrients). There is not a photograph to accompany every recipe, but those that are in the book (about half, I would say) are well photographed and show you what the final product should look like.

Down South Paleo is an excellent book at any price, but for what Amazon's charging right now it's a little silly if you don't get the book. I encourage you to click the "Look Inside!" feature for the book to see its Table of Contents, which I think will be the final bit you need to press the "Buy" button. Great work, Jennifer!

Y'all want to get this book!
By Jaime - Gutsy By Nature
Jennifer is a fourth-generation Texan who wasn’t willing to give up her favorite comfort foods even when she realized she needed to change her way of eating to deal with a major autoimmune health crisis. Down South Paleo features more than 100 recipes for comforting family favorites from south of the Mason-Dixon line, including soul food, Tex-Mex, Cajun and creole, and Gulf seafood-inspired dishes – all of them free of grains, dairy, soy, refined sugar, and other junky ingredients. The book is also infused with Jennifer’s charm and wit, evidenced by the cheeky chapter titles such as “When the Rooster Crows” for breakfast dishes, “Roughage” for salads, and “Wet Your Whistle” for cold and hot beverages, which is a category most paleo cookbooks seem to omit but something even a Southern transplant like myself knows is a key element of good living, especially on hot summer afternoons (hello there Naturally Sweetened Sweet Tea!).

We were fortunate to get an advance copy of the book and have been enjoying perusing and cooking from it for a few days now. The first recipe we made were the Cajun-Spiced Chicken Wings and the accompanying dairy-free Ranch Dressing. There are a lot of wing recipes and techniques out there and I haven’t met one yet that I didn’t like, but this one is different in that it features a technique that creates a crispy exterior without needing a deep fryer.

I also made the Stuffed Poblano Peppers, a grain and dairy free variation on the Tex-Mex favorite, and followed it up with the Mixed Berry Cobbler for dessert, which I immediately highlighted because I notice it was AIP-friendly without any modifications needed (more on that later…). Finally, the star of the book so far has been the Sweet & Savory Slow Cooker Pulled Pork, which I share at the end of this post. My husband couldn’t resist the aroma and ate his portion straight out of the slow cooker as he was shredding the meat, but I had a wee bit more patience and paired mine with the Sweet Potato Slider Buns!

Other recipes that I have flagged and can’t wait to make are the Corned Beef Hash with Brown Gravy, the Coconut Pancakes with Peach Compote, and the southern classic Grandma’s Grain-Free Biscuits and Sausage Gravy from the breakfast chapter. For dinner, I’m looking forward to the delectable sounding Mama’s Fried Chicken and my husband wants me to make him the New Orleans Jambalaya as soon as possible! When the freezing weather arrives and I still have tomatoes on the vine I know I will be turning to this book for Fried Green Tomatoes and I guess I need to throw a party for an excuse to make the Lump Crab Hushpuppies and other “Nibbles.”

Baked goods and sweets are a big part of Southern cooking, and though Jennifer acknowledges they shouldn’t make up the bulk of a health diet, she has obviously worked hard to come up with healthier versions of all her family favorites, including a Chocolate Chip Georgia Pecan Pie, Texas rodeo-inspired Funnel Cakes, and even a grain and dairy free version of Tres Leches Cake!

What about healing diets? Every single recipe in this book is gluten free, grain free, dairy free, and soy free so if you are following a standard paleo diet template, you will be able to open the book to any page and start cooking. You will also find additional allergen information in the headnotes to each recipe, so if you have sensitivities or allergies to nuts, eggs, or nightshades (or all three), you will be able to easily see which recipes will work for you.

If you are on the elimination phase of the paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP), you will discover that nightshades and seed-based spices appear with relative frequency since they are traditional in many of the Southern cuisines that make up the basis for this book, but many recipes could be easily tweaked to remove those items. Many other recipes have just one or two non-AIP ingredients and would therefore be fine for people who have begun reintroducing foods into their diet.

The same goes for people following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Low-FODMAP diets. If you know your restrictions and are comfortable making simple modifications, you will do just fine. If you make multiple sensitivities or are just starting out on the elimination phase of a healing diet, you may want to hold off on this one (though it would make a great holiday gift for the Southern food loving friends and family in your life!).

The bottom line... I recommend this book for people who love any kind of food, particularly good Southern comfort food, but want to eat the healthiest possible versions of that food. If you cannot or choose not to eat gluten, grains, dairy, and/or soy then this would be perfect for you. If you have additional restrictions such as a need to avoid nuts, eggs, or nightshades, this book would still be a great addition to your paleo cookbook collection.
