As a novelist, Ledgard is celebrated for his ability to allow his imagination and ideas to fly wide and free even as he grounds his stories in contemporary political reality, earning simultaneous comparisons to both W. G. Sebald and John le Carré. As a journalist, he has covered East Africa for The Economist for more than a decade. Drones over Africa

A triptych is something composed of three parts, and that's the format that Author J.M. Ledgard has chosen to present his three essays on modern-day Africa and his thoughts for the future of the continent. The raw statistics are depressing - fertility rates in many African countries are not falling as fast as predicted, and economic growth is slow to nonexistent, with few decent jobs for the burgeoning number of young people. Yet the author sees hope for Africa. He has seen the mass adoption of mobile phones and the resulting connectivity as a sign that Africans can adapt to advanced technology. His own proposal is even more dramatic - a system of unmanned cargo drones he calls Red Liners, since the earliest versions may carry blood and related diagnostics from district hospitals to outlying clinics. He writes: "Since connectivity is going to be the sine qua non [indispensable element] of prosperity for the rest of the century, and since Earth's population will grow to 11 billion souls during the same period, and considering that many of these souls will want to move packages around more rapidly and precisely, it stands to reason we will have to make more intensive use of the sky by using flying robots for delivery." Ledgard predicts that these drones will begin to appear in Africa around the year 2020. They will boost economic productivity by flying high-value goods to regions where improved roads are virtually nonexistent.
It's an incredibly ambitious proposal, but the author isn't just dreaming. He's directing the Red Line cargo drone initiative, which is seeking to build the first drones and a system of droneports.
Terra Firma Triptych is a very interesting and well written story about a continent that many people have written off as hopeless. The author is a longtime journalist in Africa who has knowledge and insights about Africa and its peoples, so as much as his drone proposal may sound like "pie in the sky," he just may be on to something.

A manifesto for drones in Africa

One of the more unusual pieces of nonfiction I've ever read, two parts lyrical travel writing to one part development economics. The switch from an account of a trek across an empty wilderness to an argument for how cargo drones could revolutionize the continent is wholly unexpected (sorry for the spoiler). Yet somehow it works, held together by Ledgard's gorgeous prose and deep connection to Africa. Short, fascinating and heartfelt.
