An article in a Botswana newspaper about an elderly white man named Freddy Morris, who has lived with the Bushmen for over 70 years, has sparked John’s curiosity, and he persuades Gen to set out into the vast Kalahari to find Freddy. Encounters with locals and African wildlife weave in and out of their journey. A prominent activist working on behalf of the Bushmen speaks with them, and John soon finds himself receiving a whirlwind education about the life of the Kalahari Bushmen in the modern world.

About the Author
John Ashford grew up in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from the University of Washington. After a lengthy career in teaching and then as the director of a library, he began looking for a change. In 1990, he went to Botswana with the Peace Corps and served as a teacher. When he returned to Seattle, he taught at Seattle Community College part-time until his retirement. His articles and stories have appeared in the anthology ONE BY ONE: REMEMBERING THIRTY-ONE YEARS IN BOTSWANA, in Silk Road Review and in Seattle-area newspapers.

John had a wonderful sense of respect and curiosity for all the people ...

I've been waiting for years for John Ashford to write his book. Here it is…once I started to read it, I could not put it down! As a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer in the early 1990s, I'd travelled some of those dusty, sandy Kalahari paths with John and his wife, Gen. John had a wonderful sense of respect and curiosity for all the people we met, including the San. The rock paintings seen at Tsodilo Hills and John's prior knowledge of these indigenous people were enticements to go back and visit. He wanted to know more! John writes with humor, reflection and sensitivity about the indigenous people of Botswana.

Conversation with the author

I just finished the book, "Meeting the Mantis." My first reaction was, "What a direct and open conversation John is having with me." I appreciate that feeling of connection when I am reading. As I finished it I was of two minds. One, I was sorry that the adventure and experience, albeit vicarious, was over. Secondly I was so happy that I got to follow his vision and make this trip to the people of the bush. His sharing, openness and special insight are a gift.

Opened my eyes to a world I had hardly ever considered

A wonderful story: part travelogue, memoir, history and anthropology journal. This is the first-person account of John Ashford's personal journey in Africa ... and a glimpse into the lives and journey of today's Botswanan bushmen. John presents his journey through the eyes of the many people he met or interviewed in Botswana. And yet, this book flows like a novel. Although the questions John raises are unsettling, he avoids simple answers, leaving room for his readers to ponder these questions on their own. I highly recommend Meeting the Mantis.

About the Author
Born in Montreal, Canada, Kim grew up in an Orthodox home, learned to cook from her Moroccan-born mother, and spent summers with family in Israel. A graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education, Kim worked as a recipe developer for Food & Wine and Chile Pepper magazines and a private chef before becoming an instructor; her classes have been sold out for the last four consecutive years. She has appeared on the Today show and been featured in The Huffington Post and The Chicago Tribune. Kim lives in New York City with her husband and three children. Sticky Date and Caramel Challah Bread Pudding
 
1 cup (61⁄2 oz/200 g) pitted soft dates
1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large challah, homemade (page 30) or store-bought, cut into small cubes or thin slices
5 large eggs
4 tablespoons (2 oz/60 g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1⁄4 cup (2 fl oz/60 ml) heavy cream or half-and-half
Kosher salt
 
For the Caramel
1⁄2 cup (4 fl oz/125 ml) heavy cream
4 tablespoons (2 oz/60 g) unsalted butter
1⁄2 cup (31⁄2 oz/105 g) firmly packed light or dark brown sugar
 
*Serves 8-10,
 
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
 
In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) water to a boil over high heat. Add the dates and baking soda, reduce the heat to medium, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is bubbly and the dates have completely softened, about 10 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a heatproof bowl and stir in the vanilla. Using a handheld electric mixer, beat on high speed until creamy, about 3 minutes. Alternatively, transfer to a blender and process until creamy. Let cool.
 
Place the challah in a 15-by-10-inch (38-by-25-cm) glass baking dish. You can arrange the cubes or slices in neat layers or just throw them all in. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, butter,
cream, and a pinch of salt until foamy, about 2 minutes. Pour in the cooled date mixture and stir
to combine. Pour evenly over the challah. Use your hands to push the challah down into the liquid to ensure all of the pieces are immersed. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake the pudding until it is golden and the edges are crisped, about 45 minutes.
 
Meanwhile, make the caramel: In a small saucepan, combine the cream, butter, and brown sugar. Place over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until a thick caramel forms, about 10 minutes. Be careful not to burn the caramel, or yourself! Keep the caramel on the lowest heat setting while the bread pudding bakes.
 
When the pudding is ready, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes, then drizzle the caramel over the top. To make in advance, let cool completely, then cover with plastic wrap and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat in a 350°F (180°C) oven until warm before serving.

Amazing cookbook

I just received The New Kosher in the mail and am very excited to try out all of the recipes in this cookbook. Tonight, I made the chicken spinach burgers and they were delicious. Not only were they easy to make, but my kids gobbled them up. What I love about Kim's cooking is that her recipes are easy, practical, and taste good too! She uses ingredients that you usually have on hand in your pantry. The preparation is simple and not too time consuming or complicated. But the end result is delicious and impressive. I highly recommend this cookbook.

Great Addition to the Cookbook Collection

Full disclosure - I won this cookbook through a PR twitter campaign, I didn't purchase it. That said, the two things I look for in a cookbook is pretty pictures and ease of use. The New Kosher nailed it on both counts. The book is beautifully crafted, and the food looks like its going to dance of the page. The recipes seem smooth and orderly, nothing overly complicated, and no wacky materials needed. It looks like a cookbook I'll come back to again and again.

Many recipes contain soy curls

While I like Jill McKeever's enthusiasm in promoting a plant based diet and an InstantPot, I did not expect that so many of the recipes would include and promote soy curls. So much so that I thought this might be a Butler Foods soy curls product placement. Soy curls do contain fat (4.5 g in 3/4 cup) and to many people seem to be a re-packaged mildly healthier sister of the heavily processed Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP. ) For anyone trying to limit the amount of soy in their diet, this would not be a good cookbook for you.

I eat a Whole Food Plant Based Diet (WFPB) and am a heavy daily user of my InstantPot (IP), but I use it to cook whole foods i.e. beans, lentils, grains, potatoes, vegetables etc. The IP really excels at cooking whole foods. It is unfortunate that Jill, with her captivating personality and youtube audience and blog, does not demonstrate this IP capability but instead relies on canned beans and mock meat as the centerpiece of her recipes.

With regret, I am returning this cookbook as I just will never use it and feel slightly deceived. If you are looking for healthier recipes for your InstantPot, Jill Nussinow's "The New Fast Food (The Veggie Queen Pressure Cooks Whole Food Meals)" and Lorna Sass "Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure". I have both of these cookbook and use them daily.

Family friendly

While I was hesitant to fork out this much dough for a cookbook, I ultimately decided it was a good investment for a few reasons. I like to watch all of Jill's YouTube videos, but the recipes don't transfer to my menu planner app. Since I no longer have a system for written recipes, this was a tiny little annoyance for recipes I wanted to try and we liked. Secondly, I freaking love my InstantPot, and love trying new recipes in it. Thirdly, being vegan, having recipes at my fingertips that are both fast and delicious (and voluminous) for the teens in my family is very important. I also figured a purchase of this book would increase the likelihood of more vegan pressure cooking books being produced.

Another thing I like about this (and all of Jill's recipes) is that her recipes are family friendly for those of with us more traditional palettes. Since becoming vegan we are eating a lot more ethnic food which we do enjoy, but coming back to old-style meals is a treat and a pleasure for us. Jill gives us that.

Something else that should be mentioned is that her recipes are low in fat for the most part which is very important from a dietary standpoint.

I can't think of any recipe in this book that we haven't liked even if it sounded a little strange looking at it. I think anyone vegan who wants fast easy tasty family meals would like these recipes.

Worth every penny

I LOVE this cookbook! Where do I start? There are color pictures for EVERY recipe. That is HUGE for me as I only tend to make recipes that I can see what the outcome looks like. All the recipes have only a handful of ingredients and all of them easy to find. Also, they are super fast to make and healthy. I can't wait to dig in. Expect it to be a staple around here

Mmmmmmmmmmm..... Yessss!

We are loving this book right now. Recently made lemon bars for a party and they were a total hit. The Mile High Lemmon Meringue Pie is rediculously awesome. Cara Cara cheesecake is another favorite. I also feel like I could eat the Tripple Citrus Tart w/chocolate crust for breakfast lunch and dinner for the rest of my life.

Great Cookbook for Citrus Lovers!

LOVE this cookbook. It doesn't have the usual, "run of the mill" citrus recipes in it. LOTS of new and interesting stuff to try, like grapefruit pie with saltine crust (really!), homemade orange curd, lots of scones, breads, and even some savory recipes such as lemon, pepper and asiago crackers, and marinated olives with lemon and rosemary. All in all, a great cookbook. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is there are not photos for every recipe. In the entire 150-ish page book, there are only 30 photos, and some of those are of utensils or fruit. To be fair, some of the recipes take two pages, but still would have been better with pics of what the dish is supposed to look like. But the recipes are fabulous!

I bought this for a gift but I didn't want to part with it. I had hoped for more non-dessert recipes, but the desserts sounded wonderful. Nice pictures, clear instructions.

Historical Detective

Doane presents a candid look at Christianity and its parallels in ALL the ancient systems of worship. This book is comparable to Alexander Hislop's The Two Babylons and is very well referenced. The author illustrates his subject matter with various archeological dilineations. Additionally, the author provides clarity to an ancient diety or religious system by providing a brief definition. This book is a great starting point for those begining a study into ancient religions and provides the stepping stones to take one's study in a specific direction. For the informed researcher this book provides a source who's textbook quality could be used as a foundation for further research.

This is the real "Good Book"

I gave this book as a gift to my son, who is engaged to a Christian girl, and was being strong-armed into that mind-set. He already possessed valid instincts about what God is, and how contrived the bible sounds - but this book helped to really arm him and help him hold his ground. The "word of god" is clearly presented here as being a work of men, altered through time, influenced by many different cultures. We need books like this to steer clear of that superstitious regime!

He writes regular columns for and is a member of the Editorial Board for the Pacific Citizen, the national newspaper of the Japanese American Citizens League, and his columns are also published in the Nikkei Voice, the national newspaper of Japanese Canadians

JA Contribution to American Culture

This book is delightful and thoroughly researched in all aspects of being Japanese American. It reminds us how much JA culture has contributed to our lives—foods such as sushi and ramen, Godzilla and samurai movies, and the inspiring resilience of a people who continues to thrive despite a period of unjust internment. It also shows that assimilation is best achieved, not by burying our identity, but by bringing our specialties to the table and enriching the cultural feast for everyone.

Easy, insightful read about Japanese-American culture

Gil's book was very easy to read: organized like a history book on Japanese Americans (JAs), I enjoyed reading about how JAs have maintained some of their Japanese heritage while weaving that in with growing up in America (or Canada).

Reading the book gave me a greater appreciation of my own Chinese American upbringing. I liked the various Japanese words/phrases sprinkled throughout the book along with the insights from various JAs/JCs about how their experience was growing up in North America. I also learned a lot more about the internment of JAs during WWII, which was sad to read about but gave me a greater understanding of that time period since I only remember learning a small bit of that part of American history growing up. May we never repeat this kind of treatment of fellow Americans again.

A recommended read for those who are interested in learning about JAs.

Memoir, tour and guide for Japanese Americans, their friends and everyone else.

Full disclosure: I'm biased. Gill is one of my closest friends and had been for a long time now, and I've long ben a big fan of Gil's writing. When we meet he was still "a banana" (the start of t the book explains that phrase), and I've had the pleasure off being along for parts of the journey as he started to connect with his heritage. If you're a JA, you'll probably find some of your story in those of Gil and all the people quoted. If you're not, you'll find a ton of stories, history, humor and lots and lots of food. You may find yourself wanting to visit Japan, which I definitely recommend (it's an amazing place). Look for that affordable photo of a young Gil dressed as a cowboy!
