Review
“William Irwin has transcended ideology and tribalism to unite a set of ideas that, for the first time, could end the rancor between the Left and the Right by reminding each of their shared values. This book will change the thinking of everyone interested in politics, economics, or religion—a game changing work.” —Michael Shermer, Publisher of Skeptic magazine, Presidential Fellow Chapman University, author of The Moral Arc.

“Irwin offers a defense of free market existentialism that is very readable and refreshingly humble.” —Joel Marks, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, University of New Haven, author of Ethics without Morals: In Defence of Amorality and Bad Faith: A Philosophical Memoir

“This is a first-rate book; gutsy and charmingly written, with a genuinely exciting central argument. Amoral-atheist-existentialist-capitalism is compelling and ahead of its time. Irwin has crystallized our forbidden thoughts, articulating them in an accessible way, showing why we should no longer keep quiet about them.” —Sharon M. Kaye, John Carroll University, author of Philosophy: A Complete Introduction

“William Irwin skillfully rescues existentialism from the specter of collectivism, with which it never sat easily.” —Mark D. White, chair of the Department of Philosophy, College of Staten Island/CUNY, and author of Kantian Ethics and Economics: Autonomy, Dignity, and Character

From the Back Cover

In this incisive and engaging book, William Irwin defends three controversial views: that Sartre’s existentialism is a better fit with capitalism than with Marxism, that we need to go beyond the “final delusion” of objective morality, and that libertarian political theory should be put into practice. The result is a new synthesis: free market existentialism. With insights from Nietzsche, Sartre, Nozick, and Hayek, Irwin challenges many common assumptions about morality, natural rights, the role of government, the free market, economic inequality, and fairness. Not ending a debate but aiming to start one, Irwin proposes free market existentialism as a new competitor in the marketplace of ideas. With clear and accessible language that will resonate with students, scholars, and armchair philosophers alike, The Free Market Existentialist begins an essential philosophical conversation for the 21st century.

Detailed analysis and a thought provoking elucidation of the philosophy of Existentialism in the free market scenario.
By Rakhi Jayashankar
The book is an adult non-fiction. Author, who calls himself an existentialist, tries to put forth a conglomeration of free market and existentialism. During the first part of the book, author quotes several advocates of existentialism in the beginning. Nevertheless, his views are more concentrated around Sartre and his Existential Marxism. He shows us how Sartre evolved towards Marxism through his books Being and Nothingness, Critical Dialectical etc. Author argues that Sartre’s inclination is towards two different disciplines. These parts of the book is quite informative about the history of existentialism. It is written in a systematic manner. Later when author tried to put forth his views, we get another picture or outlook, I would say.

While learning more about existentialism, I had a doubt about the validity of existentialism in terms of morality. It is then the author explains moral anti-realism. The chapter comes at the right time in tune with the reader’s mental process but at some points, author lost the grip and focus on the real subject. Later he changes the focus to capitalism, consumerism, and the free market possibility. Even while advocating a free market existentialism, the thought of minimal government made me think that he is a core existentialist. But this has nothing to do with the quality of the book. Hence, I would count it as a negative.

I would not say that the book will convince the reader to become a free market existentialist but the book will definitely evoke a debate or argument on the topic and maybe we could find an optimal solution.

The writing style is quite professional and maintains the academic standards. The research put in by the author is tremendous. The book is a quite informative and thought provoking one and it would definitely be in the shelves of the lovers of the similar genre.

A Delightful Book, that Requires Engagement, not Agreement.
By Nathan VanLaningham
I loved this book. I did not agree with its final conclusions, but I loved the book. It was written with clarity about a topic that I find endlessly fascinating. The Free Market Existentialist was approachable, without the oblique and specialized vocabulary that has accompanied much of the philosophy or classical economics that I have tried to read. This book proposes that existentialism by its requirement of radical free-will and self-responsibility has similarities to libertarianism. “The main link between existentialism and libertarianism is individualism. The individual is primary and the individual is responsible.” (Kindle Location 247)
Professor Irwin summarized existentialism like this: “Existentialism is a philosophy that reacts to an apparently absurd or meaningless world by urging the individual to overcome alienation, oppression, and despair through freedom and self-creation in order to become a genuine person.” (Kindle Locations 450-451) He went on to discuss alienation, oppression, despair, freedom and self-creation. I was hooked on the clarity and moved by affinity, as he described anguish felt by a person for whom religious belief is no longer an option.
However, I did disagree with the book in the following three ways. William Irwin's description of "moral fictionalism" appears to be a contradiction of authenticity, a requisite to existentialism. While he addresses that objection, I found it unconvincing. Secondly, the professor's position requires that what is good for the individual is good for the group in aggregate. John Maynard Keyne's "paradox of thrift" would appear to contradict this assertion. Finally, the book appears to attribute far less societal impact on economic elites attempting to affect their ability to accumulate future resources, not through value creation but rather by rigging the game against other non-elites. I find the professor to be unpersuasive, in spite of his use of the three generations from long-sleeves to short sleeves statistic. I say these things as a compliment. While I did not agree with the doctor's points in all cases, I was completely engaged and delighted in the intellectual arguments.
I greatly enjoyed the book and found it to be clear and encouraging title. It reminded me of things I had forgotten and facilitated my thinking about many things of which my knowledge was fuzzy, incomplete or in error. In spite of my gratitude and respect for the title, I cannot move past the fact that the conclusions do not necessarily follow from the suppositions. Specifically, I found free will fictionalism to be a hurdle that I could not overcome in being willing to be led to the conclusions of the author. Still, I am very glad I read it, and have since ordered another book by the same author.

Step Inside the Venn
By EditingPen
I am a fan of philosophy, particularly the wisdom of Sartre and Nietzsche, and enjoy Economics 101 (huge fan of Freakonomics). In The Free Market Existentialist, I was very curious to see how the author would intertwine the two. As it turns out, he not only combined the concepts, he created a fast-paced and intellectually stimulating read. The book is, in short, fascinating. While it may not be an end-of-a-long-workday read, it is perfect for the college student, lover of philosophy, or anyone willing to delve into the complex world of existentialism, libertarianism, and capitalism that the author has so eloquently laid out.

Irwin begins by proposing free market existentialism as a new competitor in the marketplace of ideas. He then links existentialism and libertarianism with individualism and then very orderly defines each and follows with how existentialism helps capitalism. You may need to reread one or two chapters, but there are plenty of opportunities to take notes. The extensive bibliography is worthy of a few sticky tabs, and you may need to have an extra highlighter on hand.

This book, while largely cerebral, is not the dry intellectual rhetoric found in the pages of many books on the same subject. In fact, it just the opposite. The author clearly is in the habit of questioning the world around him, and wants you to do the same. His blend of wry observations and knowledge (he is a long-time professor and Chair of Philosophy) adds depth to and enriches each passage. And he does present a wide variety of topics: individualism, free will, moral anti-realism, capitalism, and a minimal state.

Early in the book, the author created a Venn diagram with one circle of existentialism and one circle of capitalism, drew a circle in the middle, and invited the reader to step inside. This is essentially a microcosm of his ideas; that he is not advocating for a black and white, one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, he is combining seemingly incompatible ideas and perspectives to create a world view that is unique, thought provoking, and may even inspire you to put forth ideas of your own. After reading this book, draw your own Venn diagram and see where you land. You may be surprised.
