I was very pleased with speed I received book and its condition. However, I had to return it because my professor changed required textbook. I was able to use the same seller to replace this book with the one now required. I have had good results dealing with this seller thus far and trust my replacement text will arrive as promised on Tuesday, January 14.

Every American should read this book. Every family who has a Veteran in it should read THIS BOOK. Washington and the currant administration are so accurately portrayed as is the Media. Americans need to take Our America BACK. The principles that have made America...America; need to be returned. America needs God back as well. All the "Jack's" in Our Country need to wake up and take Our Country back!!

Not Exactly As Expected

I was quite looking forward to 225 recipes for "Electric Pressure Cooker". Going through this e-book page by page I find that more often than not, most of these recipes are for a stove top pressure cooker. I can't say how often I ran into these two expressions: "when done cool under the tap, take off lid when safe"' in the recipe for pressure cooker lupsi - "cook on high for 4 whistles"???? I have yet to see an "Electric" pressure cooker that you would cool down under the tap. Overall, a big disappointment.

Potentially life-threatening advice inside. When the title states 'electric pressure cooker' and the front cover picture is of an electric appliance, you don't expect the author to state in the recipes to 'run it under water' to bring the pressure down! While most people would know NOT to do this with an electric cooker, there are people out there who would simply follow the instructions given.
While the recipes can be adapted for electric with trial and error, its annoying that the author couldn't be bothered to actually provide the correct instructions in the first place given the book's title. Anyone who paid money for this book should be refunded.

Much better cookbooks on electric pressure cookers. This definitely has stovetop pressure cookers in mind when it says to bring pressure down by running cold water over it. Did that 50 years ago with the old stovetop pressure cookers. Needless to say you DO NOT do that with an electric model

getting past the hyperbole and polemics you have a very well researched and thoroughly documented history. This should be read to get a good understanding of what was actually happening in the lead up to the war. There were actual actionable grievances that were overshadowed in the stream of time, as well as questionable practices in some of the trials.I would've given 5 stars but for the polemics.

Powerful and convincing, this is one of the best pieces of its kind ever written. Should be required reading for anyone interested in the start of WWII and for those who mistakenly believe that Gleiwitz was a "false flag" operation/excuse for Germany to go to war.

An Absolute Must Read

I don’t like to overuse the term “must read” but Linda Martin Alcoff’s The Future of Whiteness is a must-read. We live in the era of white reaction to non-whites getting equal rights, and changing demographics – by 2050 white Europeans will no longer be a majority - have created a frenzy of over-reaction on the right, and some problems on the left too, as Bernie Sanders found out when Black Lives Matter upstaged him and demanded to be heard.

When we see white supremacists courted by a major political party, and groups touting “white slavery” and “white genocide,” it’s time white people take a look at what is going on, and think, perhaps for the first time, about what being white means, what it has meant in the past, and what it will mean in the future.

As Alcoff writes, “This is a book about a topic many would rather avoid.” It is not an easy subject, racism, particularly when we are assured by the same political party courting white supremacists that we live in a post-racist world (there is a left-wing version of post-racialism too, she argues). There is a lot of white-splaining going on over at Fox News – by white men. I’m a white man, and this offends me.

How does a white male of all demographic groups get to tell non-whites how they should feel?

Alcoff points to the election of Barack Obama and to “a white reaction that can take some pretty hysterical forms.” She says that “holding a significant majority within a nation has granted whites the ability to believe in the legitimacy of a white-dominated government.” I would argue that it goes further than this, to a white “Christian” government, but Alcoff is not interested in the religious question, and you won’t even find it in the index of her book.

The subject at hand, I have to admit, is potent enough, and that would make for another book altogether. So we have a “Sturm und Drang” as she says, on the right, but we also have a white-dominated left. And white liberals, she says, “remain uncomfortable in broaching the topic, while white conservatives generally try to disguise their racial references, though the disguise is often so ineffective as to be a joke.”

This is an uncomfortable topic for liberals and progressives as well, much as we might want to deny it. I know the suggestion made me uncomfortable in reading it, but it forced me to re-examine my own reactions. Alcoff says that “the extreme unabashed right wing dominates race-talk, while all others, including the left, the liberals, and the moderates, largely maintain race avoidance.”

And that was what Bernie Sanders, for example, was accused of – ignoring systemic racism. He had been invited to speak about Social Security and Medicare. His response was a “racial justice platform” that then won praise from the BLM movement. Alcoff doesn’t address Sanders or Black Lives Matter specifically but they seem excellent examples of the forces she is addressing.

And Alcoff says we need to talk about this, and she calls the left’s tendency to separate class from race unhelpful in this regard. I thought about this, and I do think it is true that we tend to do that. She points out that “If race is basically an illusion – or a mere ideological overlay that mystifies reality, as it is on this mainstream left view – then the demographic changes make no real difference, only a difference at the level of ideology.”
From the point of view of a liberal, this means that at the very best, even if we are not part of the problem, we are also not part of the solution.
Alcoff moves on to a discussion of whiteness, what it is, what it means, and its history, and history shows that whiteness as “moveable” boundaries, as she puts it; Irish and Italians have both had to earn their white status, and she points out that even today southern Europeans and Jews are only “borderline” whites.

It’s a bet of a mess isn’t it, this “white” thing? In fact, whiteness is a “historical and social construct” rather than a “singular idea” and it has changed and continues to change. She talks about labels and the changing nature of social identities (given society itself is changing). She employs categories from around the world, including Yugoslavia after its break up, the Mason-Dixon line, and Rwanda, and offers us a brief history of “race” and a discussion of “class.”

This is no easy read and it should not be, given the complexity and importance of the subject. It is important we understand these things so that we can intelligently discuss them. These are concepts it is often difficult for us to wrap our thoughts around, even assuming we can come to some agreement on terms.

Alcoff’s chapter on white exceptionalism is particularly important today, and here she employs William Faulkner to illustrate our contradictory attitudes towards race and white supremacy. Being a philosopher, it is hardly surprising that we should also meet here Newton and Goethe and discussions of universalism versus purity.

This is a book that will make you think, and it would have very little value if it simply validated existing attitudes. Because whiteness is not an unchallenged default, this is a subject that should receive our undivided attention. I cannot recommend this book enough. It will challenge your thinking, and I can think of no higher praise.

Limited in scope

Written in an academic style but lacking the rigor of most academic works, this book falls somewhere between a general interest book for the public and a scholarly work. It does contain an index and extensive reference section so could be suitable for use in a college class but frankly, the overall impact falls short. It's not without merit, it just doesn't seem to substantiate the assertions made...or take the basic premise far enough. While it is true that the white majority is rapidly becoming a minority, what is much less evident is how that impacts society at large. If we are to presume that white privilege alone is the only measure then it is a limited scope to be sure. On the other hand, if we are to assume that a migration from "white" Latino's and other current "minorities" will result in a similar shift from "Jewish, Italian, Irish etc to "white" then a vastly different picture emerges. The now infamous "oreo cookie" reference is yet another example of the problem with trying to neatly package and define whiteness in this nation. Overall this is a topic in need of discussion but as a foreign born and raised "non -white" married to an extremely "white" spouse, even our own relationship has been redefined via government agencies over the years...initially we were considered an "inter-racial marriage' via the Census - against our own wishes...and then later redefined...and redefined again. Clearly this is a topic in need of clarity and discussion so I was glad to see this work begin to initiate that discussion but the overall impact was limited and conservative.

Provocative and challenging - not light reading, but many vital observations

This is a provocative and challenging analysis, and it demands a fair amount of effort from the reader. If you're familiar with the Polity press, you know they publish very detailed academic research, and this is no different.

If I had a wish - and this was not promised by the book, so it's no complaint - it's that it would be more accessible to general audiences. It raises strong ideas but I do think a reader needs to come with an open mind and a background in history. If you come to this book unprepared to hear that "white supremacy" is a true thing, you might be too defensive to get anything from it. The reality about "white culture" isn't that it's automatically better/worse - but it IS/WAS the supreme culture in the country, and that is now changing, and of course that culture doesn't like that.

But right now we're still in the middle of this change - so one 'side' is grasping to a fading past, and the other is rising to a more equal place. It's revolutionary, even if it doesn't seem that way.

It's tough to point to any one thing from this book to try to sum it up. This is well-presented academic research and I think an audience interested in objectively examining changes in our society will appreciate it - but this is not light reading. You need to be familiar with the expectations and demands of reading this sort of academic research to get the most from it - I'm not sure I was!

Wow, amazing!

Love this book! It's simply amazing, a stir-fry book but has lots of variations which made our meal still healthy and delicious. Just check other Chef Maggie's book, all of her books are so awesome too. I think Chef Maggie is such a kind person, she shared her knowledge in cooking by publishing cookbooks.

Wait for a price drop before buying.

OVERPRICED! I payed $9.99 U.S.D. It's a small book, with small text, and no pictures.It is 50 recipes. Its saving grace is that it actually gives you nutritional information for each recipe that's based on a percent daily value of a 2,000 calorie diet. It can and probably will get easily lost on your shelf of cookbooks, it has absolutely no words on its spine, just a blank white void. The back of the book has no words or picture either, just bar codes, huge black ones. The picture on the front of the book looks very tasty, but there is nothing in the front of the book to tell you which recipe is on the cover. This book really isn't worth more that $5.00 U.S.D. Most of the recipes you can find in it, you can look up on Youtube absolutely free. Here, on page 111 of the book:
Grapes and Chicken
Ingredients:
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 C. sliced red grapes
1 C. cubed chicken
2 C. cooked rice
1/4 C. chicken broth

Directions:
Stir fry your chicken and grapes in hot veggie oil for 4 mins. now add the broth and rice. Let the contents cook for 4 more min. until everything is hot. Enjoy.
I just randomly opened the book to this page. This recipe sounds very easy, yes. It also sounds very bland, and not very oriental/asian/chinese/japanese in any way. This book would probably be a good little book for somebody who really needs simple recipes, is on a low budget/or is counting coins, and living alone in their first place just starting out their lives in the real world. It would be a better choice than just ordering pizza, take out, or drive throughs. It would also be healthier than eating Cup-o-Noodles and hot dog wieners. But I would seriously advise waiting for the price to drop to about 50% less before purchasing.

Book Review of TotIs by J Joseph Kazden – Kirkus Reviews

Kazden offers a mind-expanding debut novel about a symposium examining the core concepts of the universe.
Imagine if great minds from across the ages could congregate in one room to discuss their understanding of time and reality. In this ambitious work, Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, among others, come together to do just this. To befit the nature of the symposium as a great Hellenic institution, the author gives each of the characters Greek names. Einstein is called “Miapetra,” meaning “one stone”; Hawking is referred to as “Geraki” or “hawk,” whereas Isaac Newton is “Neatono” or “new ton.” The men meet at Neatono’s house, where they begin a discussion about relativity theory, and specifically how the past, present, and future are relative. The author’s use of Socratic questioning proves to be a gentle introduction to complex ideas, particularly for the uninitiated. Yet, readers may still benefit from prior knowledge of quantum mechanics to truly grasp this discussion. The explorations of how perceptions of reality vary between individuals are particularly fascinating: “So two individuals of the same species with sensory equipment of unequal quality will experience differently the same reality, to all intents and purposes, would you agree?” The book introduces two new definitions: antIs, “the human observer’s experience of reality and the universe,” and totIs, “which defines a total reality of the universe unavailable to human observer’s created antIs reality.” The arguments are dazzlingly convincing, although there’s a certain arrogance in reanimating the world’s greatest thinkers simply to have them concur with one’s main thesis. However, the book is not without a wry humor—Max Planck talks of switching to a gluten-free diet and Newton speaks of getting his cataracts removed. Purists may contest the probability of each word the author drops into the mouths of these great men, but this controversy is part and parcel of this brilliantly daring piece of work.

About the Author

J. Joseph Kazden was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he studied mathematics, chemistry, and psychology in college during the early 1970s. Deeply influenced by the ideas of such thinkers as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, he began a lifelong pursuit of the nature of perception and reality. This led to the study of Taoist, Buddhist, and Hindu thought, along with shamanic and First Peoples rituals and practices, in addition to continued study in physics and cosmology, focusing on the counterintuitive nature of the reality described by relativity, quantum mechanics, and particle physics.

In the early eighties, he began a career in art, focusing on images generated by the psyche, which Jung called archetypes of the collective unconscious. Believing that the world we experience is not ultimate reality, he came to an epiphany in 2012. This book is the culmination of this journey and the expression of that epiphany.

Totis challenges our view of “reality” in an entertaining and easy to follow story. Kazden crafts a hypothetical conversation between some of the greatest thinkers known to mankind blending their theories and discoveries to justify the possibility that we are all living a persistent illusion. This is a powerful book that has the potential to change the way the reader views the world.

An Easy Introduction a Philosophy

Although I do not think of myself as a philosophy student I found this book VERY easy to follow as J Joseph builds his case, step by step. The author has cleverly given the 'argument' roles to known philosophers to keep it interesting. The writing itself is succinct and carefully written to encourage thinking along these lines. I recommend it.

"TotIs" expanded my mind and my ideas about reality and the way I perceive it. Kazden dissected huge and complex ideas in a way that was non- intimidating, comprehendible and fascinating. As I was reading "TotIs", I would continually find myself taking a step back and examining the world around me. I highly suggest this book!
