Poison Blossoms from a Thicket of Thorn, by Hakuin Zenji

Hakuin Enkaku Zenji (1686-1769) was one of the greatest Zen masters to ever live. In additional to being the author of the most famous koan ever written, “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” he is credited with reviving the Rinzai sect of Zen in Japan, perhaps the most important and most rigorous branch in the Golden Age of Buddhism. His “Song of Zazen” is chanted in monasteries daily all over the world. Hakuin taught that there are three essentials to Zen practice: Great Faith, Great Doubt, and Great Resolve. Only Dogen comes close to matching the power and breadth of his writing and teaching.

Norman Waddell has spent his life reading and commenting on the vast work of Hakuin. He has published several previous selections, all leading to his work on this major, monumental gathering, the Keiso Dokuzui, never before translated in any foreign language. Translating sacred texts requires years of practice and intimate familiarity with the material in its original language, as well as complete mastery of the available commentary. There’s no one alive better capable of handling this important and difficult offering.

For this collection Hakuin gathered more than 200 individual pieces, consisting of commentaries, memorials, poems, koans, and teisho (lectures). They were offered to the many students living around his temple as well as to the countless lay followers around the country, and Hakuin spent his life offering these teachings together with his own commentary. Result is an organic, growing collection of understanding and advice, certain to engage Zen students as well as religious practitioners in other spiritual disciplines

Review
"Poison Blossoms from a Thicket of Thorn is an authoritative volume translated from Japanese by Norman Waddell; an essential set of texts from the great master Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1769). Hakuin's tireless teaching and writing reinvigorated the ancient Rinzai line of Zen from China which is now a world-wide force. This book serves to illuminates his dry, edgy, practical and often funny way of teaching Zen in the contemporary world." — Gary Snyder

As always, Norman Waddell's translations allow an intimate and very human perspective of this remarkable Zen Man, Hakuin Zenji. Along with the Clearys and Burton Watson, Waddell's contribution to Western access to this most elegant form of religious endeavor cannot be praised too highly. This latest work, "Poison Blossoms From a Thicket of Thorn" offers yet another series of translations that deepens both insight to the most renowned "Zen Master of the Past Five Hundred Years" and to the actual practice of Rinzai Zen that Hakuin taught with such consistency. Another classic in the making and, for the serious practitioner of Zen, another "must read"!

This translation of large portions of the Keisodokuzui is like that whole painting
By Amazon Customer
Essential text for anyone devoted to encounters with the gestures of Hakuin Ekaku.

An example: consider his epic painting Fuji Daimyo Gyoretsu, with its massive simple presence of Fujiyama counterpointed by the intricately detailed procession of the hundreds of people and dozen horses of the daimyo's entourage.

Too often, we tend to caricature Shinki Dokumyo's ways as if the serene simplicity of Fuji were his _real_ emblem.

But he himself reminds us, in the painting's verse and in a note in the margins of this very text Mr Waddel has translated here, that the _whole_ painting is his response - a classic Zen-koan response in pictorial form if there ever was one - to a request by the priest of Jisho-ji for a painting of the red-haired barbarian, the 1st ancestor in the Zen lineage, Bodhidharma.

This translation of large portions of the Keisodokuzui is like that whole painting. It brings us a great deal more of the fullness (or rather, neither fullness nor emptiness) of Hakuin's gestures - garrulous, multifarious, compassionate, and often as hyper-allusive as Monk or Bird.

Poison Blossoms from a thorny tradition.
By applewood
This book is both a poetic jewel and a scholarly document, being the annotated record of Master Hakuin Ekaku's (1685-1769) hand chosen teachings (171 entries ranging from a few lines each to 36 pages long).

"Two thousand years ago the Golden Sage gave up the ghost
Leaving a rotten carcass that has stunk things up for untold ages
Now his descendants' foreheads are covered thick with sweat
After the rain, the pink peach blossoms are fringed in white mist." (p.24)

There is much to ponder in these teachings as they cut through pretense and polite conventions (the title alone should tell us that). And while they can speak to each of us, regardless of our familiarity with Rinzai Zen, at an intuitive subconscious level, the detailed annotations and notes (by both students of the master and the translator) provide the context to make it understandable to our rational mind as well.

I'm not a Zen, let alone Rinzai, student and so didn't find everything here significant or relevant, but I did find this record interesting as a glimpse into the heart of Zen life and expression of authentic Zen dharma, and, perhaps even more essentially, as an expression of Japanese literature.
