"The Way to Will Power" is a philosophical study of understanding what willpower is and isn't. If you follow the advice you will become versed in training and controlling yourself for self-improvement.

You will learn skills to control your thoughts, improve your concentration and build inner strength. Discover a means of forming good habits and of breaking bad ones. Learning to use your will power to your benefit is really learning a success principle. You can train yourself to devote your mind to the solution of problems. Gain endurance. Just as muscles can be built, willpower can be built too. The strength of your character is measured by the strength of your will.

Willpower will help you to visualise your dreams and not allow your mind to be distracted. If you buy into mind power/visualisation/laws of attraction, then Willpower is a necessary piece of the puzzle to reach success.

"The Way to Willpower" by Henry Hazlitt is laid out in a simple to understand way, however simple does not equal easy. There is a price to pay. The language is somewhat antiquated (written 1922).

Willpower: Desires are the Key

Henry Hazlitt proposes a notion that the will does not exist as a single entity. Strangely enough, this realization will lead to greater willpower in the common sense of that term. He writes: "The will is merely a name for the desire that happens to hold temporary power. Take away all desires, and there remains no will". If you would like to have a strong will, you need to have strong and persistent desires.

Every person is a bundle of desires. The problem with the most of us that these desires are shallow, superficial. They are swiftly changed. Therefore, the practical ways to develop our character and build a foundation for greater accomplishments is to work with our desires. The book instructs to be exact about the things we want it life. It will increase our chances of attaining them, and will make us better in the process.

Timeless Advice

Sage advice from the author. If one wants to achieve anything in life, then one has to be ready to pay the price and make trade offs. For instance, one can devote an hour studying for an exam or spend an hour watching television. The choice depends on one's level of interest in passing his exam. Another key point that the writer makes is the difference between desires and intellect. The intellect is not the boss. One's s desires are. The intellect is the subordinate that tries to satisfy those desires. Habits are important as well. Developing a habit is not easy but becomes easier the more one does it. Using the previous example of studying or watching television, putting forth an effort to study one hour a day will become easier each time the behavior is performed. Of course, this goes along with one's s level of interest. In short, this book is not pop psychology, which as the author notes is less than helpful.

Kilpatrick's "Political Pithyisms" does, as the title promises, bring the wisdom of our founding fathers concisely and forcefully into today's perspective. This could only be done by an exceptionally able political philosopher, revolutionary activist, and historian. The pithyisms take us refreshingly back to the bedrock of our struggling republic and Kilpatrick maps the way from there to now, and into the future - if we are to have one. This work is a timely jewel for us - an essential tool for our children. Bravo!

In these days of short attention spans, Kilpatrick provides the perfect size educational snippets of wisdom from our Founders, others who understood the American Dream, and his own original pithyisms. Every page enlightens and reminds. The author has provided a needed service in bringing the Founders' perspective into modern times in a form that is easily digestible and discernable. Youngsters whose education forgot to mention our country's origins, the reasons why we are exceptional, will find this little book a painless and fascinating path to understanding these indelible truths. What is the truth about what goes on inside a man’s head? There’s a thing. I know many may be reading this thinking that’s easy – all men think about is women, sex, food and football. Well you’d not be far wrong, the remaining 5% of time men are thinking about everything from their role, place and status in society, fatherhood, rights (or lack of) as a father should things go wrong in their relationship, health, body image, education, children, loneliness, depression, suicide, equal rights, gender inequality (where men are the disadvantaged gender) and many other topics.

If you thought men are merely simple creatures whereas women are complex people you are way of the mark, for men can and do experience just as complex a range of concerns, emotions and feelings as women. Whilst I do not deny that in the main there is a more basic simplicity to what keeps the average man happy compared to the average woman, I think if a man’s basic need for food, shelter, water … plus women, Sky Sports, drink and ahem, more food, are satisfied, a man will generally be a contented creature, but there is often a lot going on under the surface that can upset this contentment.

Most of the chapters are no more than four pages long which makes for a short and snappy read. Nonetheless for all that brevity a lot of ground is covered which makes for an insightful and educational read. For example you discover in one case that despite a father being passionately against his new born son being circumcised, he had a battle on his hands to stop his partner and wider family from making this happen. You’ll have to read the book to find out the outcome of that drama.

There was talk from another man about how being so driven and work focused led to feelings of “being a lone wolf at 30, isolated at 40, lonely at 50.” This serves as a warning to those men who focus on success at the expense of building, maintaining and nurturing friendships and relationships. It’s well known that 78% of suicides of those aged under 40 are committed by men. Around About 12 men a day call it a day. It’s a serious issue that the men and women of this country need to understand and address.

As well as this, essentially the book provides a glimpse into various areas of male concern and a stepping stone to doing further reading and research on any given topic. There are many more memorable chapters including those from Guardian Journalist Ally Fogg discussing the under-reported, often barely believed, yet horrific stories of domestic violence against men; Daily Telegraph Journalist Martin Daubney discussing the gross generalisation and hatred (largely by the metropolitan, liberal, elite media) of white working class football fans as hooligans; James Withy (Recovery Letters) talking about how men can recover from the edge of suicide; Phil Mitchell (no, not that one, another one – Project Co-ordinator Blast) talking about how society turns a blind eye to male victims of sexual abuse.

InsideMan is a collection of serious, yet concise stories about men’s lives’ that is by turns educational, insightful, emotional, sad, serious, funny, heart warming and thought provoking. By shining a spotlight on often unspoken issues the book has provided a springboard for more conversations, talks, debates and above all a call to action. Once you start reading the book, it is hard to put down; and that’s saying something, from me who usually can start and leave a book for months, before returning to it again! The fact that I managed to finish it in just 6 days is testimony to just how absorbing a read it is.

For many years the fight for women’s equality has taken centre stage and I would say has been mostly extremely successful – witness the higher academic achievement of girls and women compared to boys and men at all levels of education from primary school to university and the higher earnings of women in their 20’s and 30’s compared to their male peer group. In the push for equality for women, men and boys equality has fallen by the wayside. In reality, equality should always have been defined as equal rights for *both* girls and boys, women and men. That has clearly not been the case in so many areas of life, hence the reason for this important book and the campaign to get men’s and boy’s equality on the political agenda. The continued failure to do this and the failure to address these issues does not benefit wider society, girls or women, boys or men, in the present or future years ahead.

The book and the men’s movement underpinning it will prove vital in the battle to create a more equal society where all genders can have their voice heard and enjoy the benefits of equal rights.

Five Stars for Tackling a Very Difficult Subject Matter with Great Honesty

Growing up is never easy, even for the most popular of people. But Michael Philips takes it a step further and shares how both the bullying he experienced and his overtly shy personality caused enough hurt, that it has lasted him all his life. 5 Stars, just for the very honest portrayal that Mike shares with the reader. Sometimes books are important to read to help us remember that some damage doesn't go away and who we are is formed in our early informative years. A very important lesson that Michael shares here.

This book is a very easy read with a number of unique elements and an inspiring tone. Michael, the child of a white, upper middle class, suburban household is treated as an afterthought by his family. Isolated, but safe, in his family situation, Michael builds his own world and plays with friends in his neighborhood and watches lots and lots of television. Unprepared for the "real world", Michael enters junior high school oblivious to social cues and enters this school in the midst of a new level of dysfunction in his homelife. We find out in the book that Michael has a severe speech impediment and sees himself as ugly and awkward. Not able to relate to his father, an absent-minded professor at Boston University and terrified of his mother (she seems like a real piece of work), Michael keeps his life a secret from his family.

Armed with no family support and these disabilities, Michael is the proverbial "kicking boy" in his first and second years at a large consolidated middle school. He is ashamed of his lack of popularity, his unexpected "unpopularity", and what he sees as an abandonment by his elementary school friends and authority figures. He is at the bottom of the social ladder and lacks the skills and support to get out.

But Michael endures. Left alone most weekends and on all holidays, Michael learns how to cook for himself, institute an exercise routine, and start to build common interests with others. An odd support network of peers emerges. Envious of the travels that his parents take while he is left home by himself, Michael turns to studying geography and maps and "planning trips". He also begins tracking weather and following sports teams.

This fascination with mapping and travel - and the resulting positive energy that results from planning and implementing - has formed the backbone of Michael's life. His perseverance in the face of severe treatment and his inability to socially interact is inspiring. When he loses jobs - he just implements a game plan and tackles the problem head-on. He has learned to accept rejection in many aspects of his life and has aligned his expectations with what he knows he can achieve in light of his personal challenges. While still suffering from the effects of abuse - Michael just chugs along and has great insights on life. Oh, and it appears that he is not shy to travel and try to meet others - as hard as this appears to be for him.

The book has great travel tips and commentary from the everyday working man on societal differences across America and social strata. My only criticism of the book is that it could of been edited a bit better. But it is a self-publish. I recommend this book for anyone who likes an inspiring story about making your own life and staying positive, also for people who like to explore and travel, and for any sociology or psychology students to analyze. It is solidly worth the time to read.

Engaging translation but not the best commentary

This book was first published in London in 1982 as Effortless Being: the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. I assume the translation of the sutras is the same while Shearer, who is a disciple of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, has updated his Introduction. The text is presented in a sky blue color that is easy on the eyes and does not distract from the meaning of the words. The design by Barbara Sturman is indeed very attractive while the small size of the book (4.75 by 6.25 by 0.75 inches) makes for easy portability.

The translation itself takes up about one-third of the book while Shearer's commentary takes up most of the rest. The translation is strikingly original and interpretative. Patanjali's famous first line, which I recall most agreeably as "Now, instruction in yoga" (which I have from Ernest Egerton Wood's Practical Yoga, 1948) is presented as "And now the teaching on yoga begins." B.K.S. Iyengar, in his Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (1993), which I highly recommend in addition to this book, has "With prayers for divine blessings, now begins an exposition of the sacred art of yoga."

Clearly the differences with this first line are mainly stylistic with Iyengar emphasizing a spiritual and religious tone while Wood's aim was to reflect Patanjali's succinct style, with Shearer looking for lucidity and an affinity with the modern English expression. But let's look at the second sutra. Shearer's "Yoga is the settling of the mind into silence" is very pretty, and when one realizes that "silence" to Shearer is akin to godliness (he quotes Meister Eckhart on page 24: "Nothing in all creation is so like God as silence"), it works in a symbolic sense as well. Professor Wood's "Yoga is the control of the ideas in the mind" places a very different emphasis. But in Shearer's understanding, the idea of "control" is inappropriate. He sees instead that "Once pointed in the right direction, the mind will begin to settle down of its own accord. It needs no control or forcible restraint." (p. 68)

From my experience (I began my practice of yoga in 1974) both of these ideas are correct; and indeed it is a synthesis of conscious control of the ideas of the mind along with a sense of falling away that leads to meditation and samadhi. It is a mistake to imagine that one makes no effort, since it is the very essence of yoga that one does indeed make an effort and uses technique in order to find liberation (rather than, say, faith or knowledge). Yoga is above all a practice and nothing in it can be fully appreciated without practice. But it is also a mistake to think that one can through force of will achieve samadhi. What is required is a controlled practice in which one leads the reluctant mind and body to a place of relaxed concentration in which meditation is allowed to take place.

But let's now look at how Iyengar translates this famous second aphorism: "Yoga is the cessation of movements in the consciousness." He adds, "This vital sutra contains the definition of yoga: the control or restraint of the movement of consciousness, leading to their complete cessation." (Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, p. 46)

While I think Shearer's translation is very much worthwhile, I am less enthusiastic about his interpretation. He devotes the last part of his Introduction to the famous "siddhas" (psychic powers). He attempts to justify and explain them in terms of quantum mechanics, averring that "the subatomic universe...reveals a reality that is every bit as strange as Patanjali's." (p. 79) He even compares the superfluidity of helium near absolute zero to what is possible in the "least excited state of awareness" (i.e., the self in samadhi). This sophistic suggestion, which has largely been discredited, at least in the scientific community, relies on the false belief that the human mind (a macro object all the way down to the molecular level) can in some way operate on the quantum level. This is "New Age" babble of the most annoying sort and does not in any way explain the so-called psychic powers. Anyone who has practiced yoga long enough and has become adept at meditation has experienced these psychic powers, but realizes that they are phenomena of the mind and have nothing to do with ordinary consciousness or ordinary experience. They are--and this is why they are valuable and why Patanjali mentions them--signposts on the way to samadhi. When one experiences a siddha, it is an indication that one has stilled the ordinary mind and is making progress. I don't think Shearer really understands this.

I could also take exception to his interpretation of some of the limbs of Patanjali's yoga, or express my appreciation of some of his insights. For example, I think his translation of shaucha (sauca) as "simplicity" instead of the usual "cleanliness" or "purity" is very agreeable. On the other hand, I could disagree with his interpretation of brahmacharya as something more than celibacy. I think brahmacharya means exactly that, celibacy. Or I could find his idea that pratyahara is akin to William Blake's "closing the doors of perception" (p. 68) interesting and worth adding to the regular meaning of "withdrawal of the senses." But these fine distinctions would be beside the point. Note well that the sole purpose of Patanjali's yoga is liberation from the pair of opposites (pleasure and pain) that dominate our lives. The word "samadhi" (the goal of yoga) means both the highest level of meditation and something akin to the Buddhist "satori," or enlightenment. All of yoga is a means to this end.

For anyone beginning their yoga practice this book can help, but it should be understood that reading this or any other translation and interpretation of Patanjali's yoga sutras is only the beginning and is actually worthless without the concomitant practice of yoga.

About the Author
Everett Cherrington Hughes was an influential sociologist known for his research in ethnic relations, work and occupations, and fieldwork methodology. He taught sociology at McGill, Brandeis, Boston College, and (most famously) the University of Chicago, where he mentored in interactive and qualitative research such sociologists as Becker, Goffman, Strauss, and Friedson. Hughes served as President of the American Sociological Association and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
