Atreyashiksha is one of the Shiksha texts of the Krishna-Yajurveda, Taittiriya school. A comprehensive textbook of Vedic phonology

Atreya Shiksha is one of the most comprehensive textbooks of Vedic phonology, the Vedic science of sound, more than 4 times as long as the more famous Paniniya Shiksha. It presents the alphabet, and the rules of pronunciation in the context of describing the various modes of recitation of the Vedic text. It has the most exhaustive description available of the letter by letter or "phonic" recitation of the Vedas, but it puts this system of recitation in the wider context of the complete repertoire of the modes of recitation taught in Vedic education. This is the most important Shiksha text to come to light in the past century, and Deepro Chakraborty has done it full justice. His critical edition of the text is masterful, his introduction extensively researched, insightful and informative, and his translation makes lucid the fine details of pronunciation of the Vedic texts. The extensive appendices and bibliographies are extremely valuable for research scholars, and he has presented a comprehensive vision of the history of research in the field of Vedic phonology which should help orient any newcomer to the field. This book is well thought out, profoundly researched and well crafted, and is unquestionably one of the major resources available today in the field of Shiksha.
There are two extraordinary and delightful features that are unique to this textbook. First, the author has found English equivalents for all of the Sanskrit technical terms, an unprecedented accomplishment, and all of these terms are collected together with their corresponding Sanskrit phrases in Appendix 3. This helps to make the more difficult points of pronunciation more accessible. Second, the Sanskrit text is reproduced three times in the book: First, the critical edition is presented in Devanagari, then it is repeated in transliteration verse by verse with the translation, and then, amazingly, the original unedited version of the original Hamburg manuscript is typeset in Grantha script, so that a scholar can study with clarity the wisdom and finesse by which the raw unedited manuscript has been transformed to an elegant and grammatically correct critical edition. Cakraborty is an accomplished scholar, and this book is a brilliant contribution to Vedic study.
