Bravo! Love the direct, no holds barred approach for those seeking advanced consciousness.

I love this series on consciousness! Unique viewpoints, no holds barred, straight talk. I can't stand people who sugar coat and lie, saying what the masses want to hear, or what will sell books. I found this series of books (I'm on book 5 now) refreshing, a little intimidating from the information provided, but still encouraging me onward for my journey to seeking further consciousness. I've used the methods described in the books for self growth and healing, and have already had noticeable changes in my life. I can relate to so much of what the author says on so many levels. I've been seeking truth and answers for most of my life and will never stop seeking to better myself. Religion never worked for me growing up as a child, but rather it created dissonance in me, created problems for me to solve, it never resonated with me making me feel like an outsider and sending me off as an adult in search of answers to all my questions that religion couldn't/didn't answer. These books have helped fill in some of the blanks. I resonate with what the author says... that the true spiritual path to expanded consciousness is difficult and not for the ego-driven majority. Bravo to the author. I'm so grateful for his/her words (author is anonymous).

I love to eat different kind of cuisines and trying to cook them base on the recipe books that I have collected. This set is my 2nd recipes book about Persian and Indian recipes which I find very interesting because unlike the other one, the recipes have different approach when it comes to preparing the food and serving them. I am impressed! The combination of this book was extremely great. These two books are the ultimate all-in-one resources for everything we need to know about Indian and Persian recipes. It will give us the step-by-step procedures on how we can create different delicious and healthy meals. Those recipes can be easily prepared and cooked. Huge disappointment and a complete waste of money

I hesitate to give this even one star. Huge disappointment and a complete waste of money. The Persian recipes are Persian only in so far as the word Persian is used in the title. They seemed more like Greek cuisine but, while Greek cuisine is wonderful, I was looking for something else. The Indian recipes were okay but not classic dishes.

What a fun book to read. I felt like I knew all the people in the book . . . or should I say I wish I knew them as their stories were so interesting. It made me realize how many storied there are to hear but I just don't ask. One day these people will be gone but thank goodness the author put it to pen and paper so others can read it. I am going to buy a couple more for Christmas gifts. Enjoyed it thoroughly!

Although there are hundreds of English translations of the Tao-Teh King, there is none that comes close to this 1905 translation by C Spurgeon Medhurst. In fact of all the religious books in print today none provides a better introduction plus so much more to the study of truth, who we are, why we are here and where our journey will take us. A very special addition to the superb translation of the Tao by C Spurgeon Medhurst are his nearly perfect footnotes from religious scriptures including the bible, philosophers, poets, others, that explain every passage of the Tao in a way that make them far easier to relate to and understand. If for some strange reason I were allowed to have only one book to read for the rest of my life I would select this translation of the Tao-Teh King; if two, I would add the Gospel of Thomas.

Masterpiece from the 20th century's wisest philosopher

In a century in which philosophy has been taken over by pedants eager to "analyze" every technical problem ever devised by the perverted ingenuity of the mind of man--technical problems, moreover, which, as Santayana himself once put it, are "solved best by not raising them"--it is comforting to know that at least one major philosopher never forgot what philosophy is really all about: namely, wisdom and love of knowledge. Whereas other philosophers seek to impress by being original or controversial or obscure, Santayana merely attempts to describe things as they are. Santayana is above all a realist, not merely in the philosophical sense of believing that external objects exist outside of man's consciousness, but also in the more general sense of accepting the world as it really is and not as we might wish it could be. So many philosophers seem motivated primarily by a desire to rationalize away the disagreeable aspects of reality. Santayana's approach is different. While recognizing that reality has its disagreeable elements (Santayana was certainly no optimist), he seeks to distinguish, as he once put it, the part of this disagreeable or mixed reality "that could be loved and chosen from the reminder."
In "The Life of Reason," Santayana sought to explain how reason emerges in five separate areas of human existence: thought, society, religion, art and science. Originally, Santayana devoted one book to each subject. In this present edition, all five books have been abridged by the author and made into a single volume. The unabridged version is superior to this one. The abridged version is more difficult to follow, because in the process of condensing five books into one, gaps have been created in the exposition of Santayana's thought. Unfortunately, the original five volume edition is no longer in print.
The best two volumes of the unabridged version were "Reason in Common Sense" and "Reason in Religion." The first of these books shows how men came to discover the external reality of nature and the independent existence of other minds. There are chapters on how thought is practical, on the "malicious psychology" of philosophers like Kant, Hume and Berkeley, on how thought is practical, and on Santayana's contention that ideas are not abstractions. "Reason in Religion" is one of the most interesting books on religion ever published and ought to be read by every atheist and agonistic who regards religion as a mere tissue of delusion and irrationality. Santayana, while denying the literal truth of religion, contends that religion nonetheless represents a sort of poetic and moral truth expressed in symbols that can be grasped on a very human level. "Religion remains an imaginative achievement, a symbolic representation of moral reality which may have a most important function in vitalising the mind and in transmitting, by way of parables, the lessons of experience."
The over-riding theme of "The Life of Reason" is Santayana's conviction that only by recognizing the material world and the "conditions of existence," can the spirit become enlightened concerning the source of its troubles and the means of its happiness or deliverance. There is, I would contend, no philosophical work of the twentieth century that is more sane, that expresses better judgment on the main issues of philosophy, or that demonstrates a deeper wisdom about the nature of things than this classic work.

The Life of Reason is a marvelously executed, exceptionally elegant philosophical tour de force. Santayana refuses to be blinded by prejudicial notions and founds his philosophical hermeneutic on common-sense, logic, and probability. One reviewer here has noted that Santayana takes a myopic perspective on religion. Frankly, this is baffling. Santayana believes that religion is a kind of species of literature and that we should not look to it for scientific insights. In contrast, he believes that religion, in the abstract, has, as all belief systems do, a rational framework, so to speak. In addition to this, Santayana finds much about theology and religious ritual, more aesthetically speaking, intriguing. This is hardly a one-sided view. The Life of Reason will not interest those attracted to the turgid obfuscatory mutterings of Heidegger, postmodernist critics, and other related thinkers. It will appeal though to those interested in analytic philosophy, logic, and scientific skepticism. A wonderful book.

The Life of Reason --- and the Kindle version

The Kindle version of this book is not very well-done. It's taken straight from the Gutenberg project and can only be read with the large Kindle turned sideways into landscape mode.

There is ANOTHER Kindle edition from Dover which is a heck of a lot better!

Now, as for "The Life of Reason" itself, you need to know that this philosophical masterpiece was originally published in five volumes, and that the one-volume version involved (of course) serious re-writing.

But where can you find the original five-volume edition?! It's out of print.

The Kindle edition from Dover has all five volumes, and it's a great deal. But I grew frustrated at trying to deal with this huge masterpiece on the Kindle, and finally found a bookshop offering the five Dover volumes used (for about $50). If you come to like Santayana, you may well go this route yourself. The Kindle is a great invention, but it's not so hot for constant page-flipping, comparison, and all that. For some things, you will want the actual printed books.

Great spice for almost anything.

Great seasoning, spicy but not hot. I have used it as a meat rub. Added it to chicken fried steaks. Added it to chili, soups casseroles. I find it is great no matter what I have added it to. Works well with beef, pork and chicken. I went to the river but could not find any gators in Washington state :).

Great book, could use a better translation

I'm not a "real" vegetarian, but, I really like this book. A lot of recipes, a lot of nutritional information. But, I found the translation from Swedish to be a little vague. Almost every recipe has "bake" translated as "grate". The temperature conversions are strange, 392 F, etc. But it all works. If you are an experienced cook, it makes no difference.

What I really like are the substitutions. The author gives a recipe, then lists several others changing out the ingredients. I don't like eggplant, but like zucchini, it seems they are interchangeable in many of the recipes.

The fruits and deserts are phenomenal. I also like the Swedish spicing.

I pretty much skipped that part

Not just a cookbook, the first part of the book is a treatise on vegetarianism in its many forms. I pretty much skipped that part. As an omnivore who enjoys vegetarian foods 3-4 days a week, I was just interested in some new recipes. This book was written by a Swede for people in Sweden so I also chose to skip recipes that called for what would be non-local foodstuffs here in the USA. However, there are still plenty of pleasing, easy-to-make and innovative recipes for every meal of the day for North Americans. I plan to try some few. Recommend it to others with the same cooking interests. The only thing I truly do wish it did have is a USA nutritional chart for each recipe - so helpful in creating balanced meals and carb counting.

She laid the groundwork for a unique coalition of Native Americans and environmentalists who are now working together on issues related to nuclear energy, fisheries, and oil pipelines. She lectured and taught at schools and universities all over the United States. She lobbied Congress on irrigration, labor rights, nuclear energy, and peace, and she corresponded with a global network of environmental leaders. But for all her influence, she never held a political post higher than precinct committee officer in Seattle's 43rd legislative district, and her highest office in the environmental movement was that of secretary in the Seattle Audubon Society, where she served for thirty-five years.

This book follows Hazel Wolf from childhood to old age, a lifetime of burning with a fierce desire for justice. She saw the quest for justice as a collective responsibility. Time and again, she met that challenge head on. Whether organizing for labor rights or founding chapters of the Audubon Society, battling to save old-growth forests or fighting deportation to her native Canada as a communist, over and over she put herself in the line of fire. A Must for Northwest Readers

In Hazel Wolf the intrepid determination of an irrepressible activist and feminist of the Northwest comes to life. The book captures the astute and often feisty voice of this extraordinary woman through her stories and memories. I found the book very compelling reading with its smooth progression of "stories" of a life never tranquil. As a newcomer to the Northwest, I loved getting to know this legendary woman through her own eyes. Additionally, Hazel Wolf's narratives gave me a richer understanding of the politics, environmental policies, and social history of the 20th Century. Starbuck's extensive research and painstaking ethnography impress as well; her self-effacing approach to the text fosters the impression that Hazel Wolf is speaking directly to the reader. I can imagine that Starbuck's relationship with Hazel Wolf was founded on mutual confidence and respect. Ultimately, the book inspires its reader to "act." Hazel Wolf is a spirited and gutsy woman, and anyone living in the Northwest should get to know her.

Activist Wanted to Have Fun

Hazel Wolf could have been your grandmother. A real tomboy, she grew up with her toes in the sand of Pacific Northwest beaches and her fingers around a basketball. The working class kids of Victoria B.C. were her "gang," and the comradeship and fun they cooked up animated her whole life.
Later, working as a secretary in Depression-era Seattle, Wolf organized fledgling unions wherever the bosses assigned her. They'd fire her for organizing, re-assign her to a new job, and she would begin organizing again. Like she always did, Hazel was just making friends and having fun.
In one of the "Hazel Stories" that fill the book, sheriff's deputies tried to evict a down-and-out family from their home by carrying the furniture out onto the sidewalk. Hazel and her friends, who sometimes cared to call themselves socialists or communists, simply carried the chairs and tables back into the house through the back door. The sheriff eventually gave up.
The U.S. government tried to deport Hazel Wolf during the McCarthy period because she was a) a communist, and b)Canadian. Just like the sheriff, the feds failed, too. Hazel had thousands of friends, and she wasn't afraid of political pressure. As she said, "I was just there, powerless and strong, someone who wouldn't chicken out. Somebody always stops the nonsense all through history."
Author Susan Starbuck says Hazel Wolf knew her life would make an important story; that it might evoke the next generation of social and environmental activists. At bookstore readings, Starbuck tells prospective readers, "Hey folks, here's an owner's manual about what to do when your government runs amok." The message of "Hazel Wolf: Fighting the Establishment" is theat we, too could have fun being activists...and also change the world.

An accurate and interesting book about a true hero

Hazel Wolf was a friend of mine and fellow board member on the Seattle Audubon Society for nearly 25 years. Susan Starbuck's book about Hazel is both highly entertaining and a very personal view of this unique woman. Susan has done a masterful job of weaving together a myriad of stories from and about Hazel into a coherent guide to Hazel's life as a dedicated organizer of social movements from her early life through her death at 101. Hazel never saw a wrong that she felt could not be righted. She dedicated her life to achieving justice, whether it was for working men and women, for jail inmates, for racial justice, for the environment or against war, often at the expense of her own personal and family life. Hazel led the way for women's independence and liberation through hard work and example without ever thinking about the meaning of those terms. At a recent celebration of Hazel's 105th birthday, Congressman Jim McDermitt and Governor Mike Lowry both said that in these times of Bush's war, we need Hazel's example of leadership more than ever.
