Nevertheless, increasing numbers of people seek inner balance using guidance from ancient traditions. Good study of early Chinese foodways

This is a good study of the Taishang Lingbao Wufuxu, an early Daoist longevity guide. The most interesting part to me, as a food anthropologist, is Arthur's efforts ot make the advice comprehensible in modern terms. He points out that the worries about the "three worms" were pretty realistic, given the worm loads in old China, and that replacing grain with pine nuts and sesame seeds would enormously improve nutrition, and that many of the herbs really do have varying degrees of medical effectiveness. He makes many other good points, using modern nutrition and food psychology. One could wish he had done more with this....some of his biology is fairly shaky and some could be driven harder. Mostly, though, I wish I'd had this book before I wrote my own recent one on early Chinese food--alas, the present work appeared too late! I'm glad to get it. I hope it inspires more people to look at the hardheaded benefits that led to the fantastically exaggerated, but not basically wrong-headed, attempts to lengthen life. (Two hints to those that want to: "long life" does NOT mean "immortality," and the "three worms" are three TYPES OF worms, not just three actual worms. Translation has been a bit shaky on this in the past....)
