It is a must read book.

Edwards, a former soldier, has collated an eye-opening anthology of stories that put a human face to violence and homicide in societies around the globe. Spanning topics as varied as honor killing, terrorism, domestic and gang violence, and abortion, Good Reasons to Kill is a unique approach to surfacing contentious issues of life and death that may not get the attention they deserve in mainstream media. Combining stories that have already seen the light of day (George Zimmerman, Andres Breivik) side by side with topical chapters on infanticide and child soldiers (which were almost too difficult to read) really highlights the nuanced way in which we view sanctity of life around the world. Great read!

Thought provoking!

Is there ever a good reason to commit murder? Is there ever enough justification to take someone’s life? Those are the main questions you should ask yourself before reading this book. At first, most people would automatically say, “Of course there would never be reason enough” but by the end of this book you may think differently. The author devotes each chapter to a different subject, such as abortion, execution, child rape, etc. He writes about a case and lets the reader decide for themselves what they would do under the circumstances. One such case that stayed with me after reading about it in the book involved a father who found someone raping his five year old daughter and then beat him to death. Another chapter involved an executioner in Texas and his views about his job. I found this whole book to be thought provoking and the author sets out each chapter in an organized and non-judgemental manner. He leaves it up to the reader to decide what they believe to be right or wrong. The only suggestion I’d make would be to make the book longer and maybe have more cases in each chapter. This is solely out of my own selfishness because I enjoyed the book so much that I wanted more of it. I read the book on my ereader and it formatted well. The cover was eye catching as was the title. This was an excellent read!

Thought-provoking look at killing

This book is organised in an interesting way. Each chapter is a case study of one particular common justification for killing. It is a real event, or in some chapters, a collection of events. I’ve encountered some of these stories before. Without preaching, or even guiding his readers’ reaction, Chris presents the case, then leaves us to make up our minds. In some places, his own convictions emerge, but by and large, he leaves things open, and thought-provoking.
I have a PhD in psychology. Although I have retired from my many years of counselling practice, I am fascinated by the inner view of people very different from me, in circumstances very different from mine. So, this approach spoke to me. I think it will speak to any intelligent, thoughtful, ethical person.
I can thoroughly recommend this book as fine reading.
