Great book to have!

The recipes are really great and delicious. The thing I like the most is that the recipes are also healthy. This book is saving me time as well, because I am working a lot and prefer recipes that are easy and fast for making. This is definitely a recipe book for a soup connoisseur. I am far from one but having an acquired taste, I can say that many soups in this book have got to be good just by the name and the ingredients within.The recipes are really great and delicious. The thing I like the most is that the recipes are also healthy.

I have accumulated a ton of recipes lately and am excited to add these to my collection. With it being in the cooler months, soups, stews and warm dishes are in great demand at present. Again, I highly recommend adding this cookbook to your e-cook book (digital) collection. I've even printed off some to add to my paper "collection"!

This book really delivers on fast, easy and scrumptious soups. My daughter is sometimes a picky eater and doesn't like potato soup. We made the recipe Dad's potato soup and she loved it and couldn't get enough.

Cualquier sufrimiento emocional es suficiente para experimentar los procesos que gestiona nuestro cuerpo en ese trance. No importa el tiempo ni la causa, una hora o un año de profundo sufrimiento, es preciso para llorar y padecer lo desagradable del dolor. Normalmente, las personas se lamentan por haber sufrido o protestan y culpan a Dios por sus desventuras y desdichas. Pero, yo me alegro mucho que haya padecido, que haya experimentado una verdadera tragedia emocional, que me hizo llorar durante casi 7 años de mi vida, en la etapa más productiva de mi existencia. Uno de mis propósitos, es desafiar a mis queridos lectores a desprenderse de las circunstancias que nos hacen adictos, a la tristeza, el odio, el miedo, la envidia, el egoísmo y la desesperanza. Estaría muy agradecida con el Universo, si, tan sólo una persona, consiga mejorar un aspecto de su vida, logre sonreír por alguna idea, o ser un poquito más feliz por llevar a la práctica alguna de las estrategias que aquí se explican. Delibero sobre el hecho de que, todo conocimiento, debe provenir de pensamientos iluminados por el Espíritu Santo. Estoy convencida, que Dios creó a los científicos para que sean sus aliados y confronten permanentemente su existencia. Así, el razonamiento científico convencerá más eficazmente a los seres humanos, que la Fe en Dios es el camino a la felicidad espiritual. En el desarrollo del texto, explico con ejemplos de mi historia personal, qué es La felicidad y el sufrimiento, en especial reflexiono, cuando todo era sueños y satisfacciones en mi vida, ¿por qué sufrí? y cómo adquirí mi nuevo estado de alegría y plenitud; especialmente, cómo conseguir la metamorfosis del alma. Presento, técnicas y estrategias, que he utilizado en mi realidad, para desarrollar la felicidad espiritual y la inteligencia trascendental, que es la suma de las tres inteligencias básicas: racional, emocional y espiritual. También presento un análisis de la información recopilada en entrevistas a colaboradores de mi país, quienes dan testimonios de las principales causas de felicidad y sufrimiento. Explico una serie de estrategias y acciones sencillas para llevar a la práctica en la vida cotidiana. Las de acción internas, son actividades que estimulan el cambio de actitud mental, la activación de la energía espiritual y el desarrollo de procesos de pensamientos positivos, reconfortantes, que contrarrestan los pensamientos negativos o tóxicos y activan la metamorfosis del alma. Las estrategias de acción externas, por su parte, son las actividades que se pueden hacer para disminuir la fijación en el problema, mejorar el estado de salud corporal, mental y emocional, e implican el ambiente exterior que rodea a la persona. Tenemos posibilidades infinitas de creación, nuestras vidas son el mayor de los regalos que nos hace el Universo. Son más bellas y magníficas de lo que podríamos haber soñado, busquemos el amor para agradecer y retribuir a Dios por esta oportunidad: permitir rectificar desde las equivocaciones, reparar los errores, para asumir la sabiduría cósmica y constituir las bases de nuestra evolución espiritual. Al crear paz y al producir luz, se desvanece el miedo a la muerte y renace la vibración de la energía espiritual, eterna e inagotable. Al final de los tiempos, regresaremos a la fuente original de Luz y Amor Altruista, donde conseguiremos la Inmortalidad; trascenderemos hacia el Infinito y nos Fundiremos con el Amor Puro De DIOS.

A book without substance

'Making India Awesome' is a book which has all rhetoric but no substance. Chetan does not seem to have any knowledge about the politics in India. He preaches everyone to change, which is easier said than done. You don't gain anything by reading the book nor will you lose any if you miss it.

My friend gave me this book as a gift. One of the best gifts ever. Excellent book covering key issues of modern India with lots good suggestions. The book may be a collection of essays published by the author in ToI. But that what makes the book so great. If you care about India or criticizing India and its politics, it is a must read. I have been visiting India for the past 5 years for volunteer service; I can relate to each and every issue Chetan Bhagat has covered so nicely. Very inspiring book for action oriented global citizens. It is an easy read with a no nonsense approach. I will be giving this book to many people as a gift.

Muller Upanishads

I can't read Sanskrit, so I'm not competent to comment on the quality of the translation. I think a big part of the difficulty in such a task is that the meanings of the important words don't translate nicely into English words, and I consequently get the feeling that my understanding of what is really being said is much weaker than when I read, for example, a translation of the Bible.

Müller did the world a great service in taking on this translation, and his comments are very helpful. At the same time, it seemed to me that he could be a bit too sure of himself. For example, in his comment to the Third Khanda of the Khândogya Upanishad which reads:

"6. Let a man meditate on the syllables of the udgîtha, i. e. of the word udgîtha. Ut is breath (prâna), for by means of breath a man rises (uttishthati). Gî is speech, for speeches are called girah. Tha is food, for by means of food all subsists (sthita).

7. Ut is heaven, gî the sky, tha the earth. Ut is the sun, gî the air, tha the fire. Ut is the Sâma-veda,, gî the Yagur-veda, tha the Rig-veda."

He comments:

"8:1 The commentator supplies explanations to all these fanciful etymologies... All this is very childish, and worse than childish, but it is interesting as a phase of human folly which is not restricted to the Brahmans of India."

And then he quotes a similar passage from Saint Augustine to show that the Brahmans weren't the only ones who were so foolish. My dissertation was on the relationship between the sound and meaning of a word, and I tend to agree with Owen Barfield that Müller might have a preconceived notion about the origins of language that flavors his commentary. In other places as well, he seems to interpret things literally as descriptions of rituals and so forth, where I think the real point of the passage might be something else. But not knowing Sanskrit, I can only surmise.

I am actually shocked that this is the first review. The kindle version of the Sacred Books of the East-The Upanishads is probably one of the first translations one should look to for an original and honest interpretation of this important work. These two things are essential to understanding the Upanishads as they were meant to be. Check this version out.

A great book written by someone who has the experience to speak about the issues. The author accurately details the lack of true conservative principles displayed by the CPC under Harper. Also the disregard for democracy and privacy which are two issues the CPC once championed. A good reminder of how far the party has drifted from its roots in the Reform Party.

Timely and Compelling!

A fascinating and timely intervention that outlines just how far Stephen Harper's Conservative party has strayed so far from values and principles it previously held dear.

I particularly appreciated how the author sheds light on the libertarian or 'principled conservative' perspective - I get the sense increasing numbers of former conservatives are embracing these ideas, and it'll be interesting to see whether the Conservative party eventually learns to adapt, or whether it stays on its current course.

On the whole this is a well-written and compelling book - the narrative flows along, resulting in a real page-turner for anyone interested in Canadian politics. Heartily recommended!

Harper vs. Free Speech: You ain't seen nothing yet

A fascinating and slightly depressing account of how the great hopes of Canada's principled conservatives were systematically destroyed by Canada's Conservative Party and its leader, Stephen Harper.

It is also the story about how the internet empowered non-elite conservative voices and how the Government of Canada trolled and persecuted those voices.

Very well written.

The one thing which shines through is Connie Fournier's lack of bitterness. She and her husband Mark have been the subject of police trolling, ginned up Canadian Human Rights Complaints, serial litigation from assorted lefties and ex-government human rights gunsels and Connie keeps bobbing back to the surface.

More seriously, this book shows just how dangerous the provisions of Bill C-51 will be in the hands of any government. The limitless harassment of Free Dominion - documented in Betrayal - by an out of control Human Rights Commision and its feckless political masters shows how seemingly innocent legislation can be used to punish political "enemies".

Did Stephen Harper sic the Human Rights Commission on Free Dominion - probably not. But what the Harper government did not do is protect the free speech of these very ordinary, deeply patriotic, Canadians. Instead, the Conservatives hid behind the Human Rights Act and its lawless enforcers while the Fourniers and many others were left to twist in the wind. Giving such people even more power to investigate and harass Canadians is a very bad idea and an excellent reason not to re-elect the Harper Conservatives.

BFF's (to phrase it in today's lingo) since they were fourteen, Authors Jane Giddan and Ellen Cole have put together a comprehensive, and ultimately, exciting book about turning seventy in the twenty-first century. Both authors are academics, and the study is in depth in ways that few books on aging are. After their own careful research in person with groups of women becoming seventy, they then turn to the women themselves to write about the challenges and delights that growing older bring. Forget the stereotypes we are all used to...these women are really rockin'! And certainly not in a creaky chair on a long front porch.

who in a few years will reach their 70s and may be better prepared then I was to meet the future

This book was a god send to me as my husband 48 yrs had just died in a foreign country and I not only had his death to handle but also to organize my move back to the USA. This book,"70Candles", gave me some direction, caused me to organize questions for my future and current life and posed questions that I had not even thought of yet. Therefore I have purchased two more books, one for my sister and one for my sister-in-law, who in a few years will reach their 70s and may be better prepared then I was to meet the future.

A Petite Package of Pessimism

Somebody needs to leave a review of this book, even if it means breaking the pessimism that zero reviews implies.

This is quite a short book—it just took me about an hour and a half to read through it at a leisurely pace. The text structure is as if Mr. Thacker compiled notes of pessimism he jotted down while he rode the train to work. Instead of providing an exegesis on fundamental pessimism, this book(let?) contains the musings of a pessimist. If you're looking for mind-numbing philosophical profundity, this may not be the book for you. If, however, you're a pessimist interested in the perspective of another pessimist, buy this book.

If you've read Nicolas Chamfort and/or Arthur Schopenhauer and/or Giacomo Leopardi and/or E. M. Cioran, this little book will be just like chewing a gum ball of pessimism until the flavor runs outs. I'd call the content Pessimism Light.

The author's writing here is often poetical, as if he were Anais Nin trying to evoke H. P. Lovecraft's imagery of graves and gloom. Lyrical and overtly eloquent, the writing lacks the gravitas and austerity of more deep-seated, experienced pessimists, and almost none of the author's own epigrams or aphorisms work or ring true. Still, it serves well as an easy introduction to the serious subject of pessimism with a capital P.

Many other authors, besides those mentioned in the first sentence of this review, are mentioned or discussed to one degree or another in this tiny book, and that feature makes for another positive aspect of the book. The author admits to being a bibliomaniac, which is just fine with me. As a consequence, the author gave me another (minor) author of pessimism to read and enjoy: Edgar Saltus. The reason other more famous pessimists do not extol yet other pessimists in their own writings may be due to the fact that these men are not bibliomaniacs, just bibliophiles.

If you have some acquaintance with Nietzsche and his appreciation of Schopenhauer, then Eugene Thacker's little work, particularly towards the last few pages, will peak your interest.

This work, as a whole, offers nothing earth-shaking or ground-breaking (and he got Schopenhauer's death all wrong. Schopenhauer did not die in his sleep, as the author said. He was sitting upright on the sofa fully dressed when he died). But only Schopenhauer, Leopardi, and Cioran are capable of such mind-bending feats.

Xenophon is said to have been, when young, a pupil of Socrates. He wrote a dialogue between Hiero and Simonides upon the position of a king, and dealt with the administration of the little realm of a man’s household in his “Œconomicus,” a dialogue between Socrates and Critobulus, which includes the praise of agriculture. He wrote also, like Plato, a symposium, in which philosophers over their wine reason of love and friendship, and he paints the character of Socrates. But his best memorial of his old guide, philosopher, and friend is this work, in which Xenophon brought together in simple and direct form the views of life that had been made clear to himself by the teaching of Socrates. Xenophon is throughout opposing a plain tale to the false accusations against Socrates. He does not idealise, but he feels strongly, and he shows clearly the worth of the wisdom that touches at every point the actual conduct of the lives of men.

Socrates is considered by many people, to be the originator from which all modern philosophical thought is derived, in one form or another. Plato's famous Dialogues, are on many a required reading list, in the majority of the thinking class. However, it has been known for a long time, that Plato inserted his own ideas into "his" portrayal of Socrates, while still retaining some of Socratic thought. This is the alternative to Plato, an entirely serious and genuine portrait of the man, so admired by all the world. Xenophon was a historian and philosopher, who wrote this book to prove to the people of Greece, that Socrates was a positive force towards their lives. It is very rare that you can find the print version of this book. It is free here and needed by those, who enjoy Greek philosophy and history.

Pragmatic

Xenophon gives a different look at Socrates than what is brought forward from the dialogues of Plato. One gets a far greater sense of Socrates' drive for living a virtuous life, and the temperance he exercised towards life that enabled him to avoid the traps of pleasure that keep most of us from achieving the greatest happiness of all. And as far as Xenophon could observe, Socrates' life of virtue and piety allowed Socrates to be 'the happiest and most contented man Xenophon had ever known. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the basis of all of Western philosophy, and of life. It has been said that Western Philosophy is just a footnote to the ideas exemplified by the life of Socrates as observed through the works of Xenophon and Plato.

Addicted to God?

Unless one was born in Stalin's Russia or in a community of devil worshipers somewhere outside of Santa Cruz, the idea of an all-loving, all-knowing god has been worked into us from day one. Our parents, our teachers, our leaders tried to assure us that we were not alone, that Our Maker was watching over us. Later, we might have learned about the famous ontological argument, the priori proof, which affirms God's existence through intuition and reason; or perhaps we befriended a nice priest or rabbi who kept assuring us that everything in life happens for a reason. We might have rebelled against some things in the Bible, but knowing that someone had a map to the intricacies of our soul felt good. Yet, doubt kept creeping in. Does God really exist or is it something human beings made up in order to have "reasons" for their pain and suffering?

Although there have been many books on the market recently eloquently offering scholarly theories against the existence of God (Richard Dawkins's "The Good Delusion, for one), there have been almost no popular literature that debunks the God-myth using simple, clear language -- until now. Aubrey M. Horton's "The God Addiction" is a beautifully written argument against the fairy tales we've been fed about god, religion, and the culture of theological delusion. Eloquent and accessible, The God Addiction is a terrific present for any precocious child or thinking adult who prefers the cold, hard truth to comfortable, soul-soothing lies. Every school and college library should have this book.

Well Argued and Potent

Well argued and potent, this defense of non-deity in the world is compelling and accurate. Philosophers have traditionally had a hard time, since Saint Thomas Aquinas, proving conclusively that God exists. For the layman as well as the specialist in these secular, skeptical times, Horton posits intriguing rebuttals for an already iffy Almighty. Like one team in a debate, Horton's thinking will garner many points toward the pronouncement of the winning side.

Clear, well-written book providing an excellent overview

This book is constructed in a manner most appropriate to the ideas within it, delivering clarity and logic. The author writes with eloquent, digestible language to give an overview of why god has persisted in the human psyche, showing the patterns of fallacies, which lead us to fundamental errors.

If you are looking for a single book to simplify a great debate, this is one is a worthwhile read.
