A good informative....and fun....read.

As a long time reader of Steve Flower's political columns I have looked forward to this book. "Of Goats and Governors...." is a fun and fact filled look at the last Century of Alabama politics and the evolving nature of society in the Heart of Dixie, I read it in a day and enjoyed remembering past events and stories and gaining some insight into events I was not as familiar with.
Mr Flowers is a nice fellow and is friends with many of the politicians (or their families) mentioned. Because of this, he pulls his punches in discussing many of the characters involved. For example in discussing the 1958 Governor's race he quotes George Wallace as saying he was "outseged" (out segregated) by John Patterson. That is NOT what Wallace said, but in deference to Political Correctness, a new term was inserted. I don't think it should have been done but that was the author's choice. Don Siegelman's and Guy Hunt's trials and convictions were mentioned only in passing.....These were major political events. The infamous Steve Windom "pee jug" incident of 1999, when the Lt. Gov could not leave the podium or he would have had his powers stripped by the Democrat Senate majority
was not mentioned at all....and I thought this would have made any book on weird Alabama political foibles. I can quibble on these omissions.The book is also a bit repetitive. This will help those not familiar with the list of characters but it became just a bit annoying to me.
While not perfect, this IS a good book and a fun read. Any book that can tell stories about Shorty Price, Mule Day, the Strawberry Pickers, and Miss Mittie.....it DESERVES to be on your bookshelf. If you're interested in Alabama or Southern politics it is a must read and I would highly recommend it to any student of politics.

If you're looking for a time machine for Alabama Politics, you have found the diamond in the rough with "Of Goats & Governors." My favorite part of the book is about Ole Big Jim Folsom and the collection of stories told from a first-hand perspective. Oh, what a character Big Jim was, and undoubtedly the most colorful governor Alabama has ever had. Steve Flowers could write a book solely on Big Jim, alone; however, the same is true for George Wallace. Both George and Jim would be BIG hit novels and I hope I see them in the future. For now, I love the story about Big Jim and and Honey Bear, who was the California Governor's daughter that Big Jim dated for awhile since he was single during his second term of office. The media was always trying to get Big Jim and every time he would take off for the West Coast, upon his return, all of the reporters would be hounding him about his time spent in the Golden State, to which Big Jim replied, "I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to the Golden State and I especially enjoyed lying on the stars and looking down at the sand." That was just Big Jim for you, unique and candid, honest and just himself.
