This book has a ton of recipes for smoothies for diabetics. It is the best recipe book I have seen so far. Very happy with this purchase. Will definitely use this vendor in the future, it arrived earlier than expected and pkging was great.

The search continues....

I picked this book up at a used book sale. It was next to nothing. As I was searching other cookbooks on Amazon, I took a look at the reviews for this particular book. Most of these reviews read like they were written by the same person. I took a closer look..... Although these reviews appear to be by different people, they also reviewed the same items in their profiles. Amazon should not allow these obvious FAKE reviews. It dilutes the reviews for anything on this website. Here's my review of this book: it's a waste of time. My search for the best, health centered, easy to follow instructions, meal pictures along with shopping lists freezer cookbook continues. Don't trust these reviews (or any others now for that matter).

Soooo this has some good recipes in it

Soooo this has some good recipes in it. Not really what I was looking for though. I wanted recipes for making a butt load of meals and freezing them so I can thaw and use through out the week if I am too busy too cook (which is most nights...nursing school...) this isn't that type of cook book. If that is what you are looking for I would honestly just google search for freezer crock pot meals and there are some good websites that tell you what ingredients you need to make like 20 bags of meals :) This is more like one meal at a time, many ingredients, many ingredients are not just random pantry items either (like you'll need to shop).. The meals sound good but are maybe more involved than what I was looking for.

Skip it No page numbers and the quantities/proportions make absolutely no sense.

I was really excited to receive this book as a gift and start cooking dinners more efficiently ahead of time. Unfortunately, this book has been a pretty big disappointment (by no fault of the gift giver!). First, there are 100s of recipes, which is great, and a really detailed table of contents with page numbers and different sections. But then there are absolutely no page numbers written on the individual pages! What am I supposed to do? Count 157 recipes from the beginning to find the page I want? Also, a lot of the quantities are outrageous. One recipe I found and was interested to try called for 9lbs of ground beef and 18c of cheddar cheese. How are you ever supposed to fit that in a freezer bag? Much less, how do those proportions make sense. I can't imagine that recipe tasting good. Sad that it's a letdown but hoping to get an idea or two from the book that I can tweak.

"KINDLE EDITION" IS A SCAM

The Histories (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
This is specifically for the "Kindle edition." I was looking forward to reading Tom Holland's new translation of Herodotus but will have to wait for hardcopy to arrive. The Kindle edition being sold on this page is for a different translation. It has no translator credit and no introduction, and I suspect from the style and typesetting that it is an upload of an old Dover pulp edition or some other such garbage.

In other words, if you want to read Mr. Holland's opus, you are stuck murdering trees for now.

This aspect of Amazon's Kindle store never fails to disgust me. I really wish Amazon would go through and remove all the self-published garbage. Surely they can separate it out into a "Self-Published Gatrbage" store or some such...

Dave Sterrett has written a highly engaging book examining many of the philosophical fallacies in the abortion debate. The book challenges many of the lies on which abortion is founded and the philosophical assumptions that help to support the destruction of human life. No rock is left uncovered as Sterrett argues against materialism, scientism, relativism and secularism while metaphysics, personhood and natural theology are defended. A restoration of Aristotle’s philosophy would help to form hearts and minds towards protecting the unborn.

He describes how metaphysics is essential to the ethical debate about abortion. Sterrett attacks scientism as a promotion of science for its own sake that leaves no room for any immaterial reality or type of transcendence. He also examines the views of many famous philosophers and celebrities, examining the errors in their thinking. David Boonin comes under particular attack for his lack of professionalism, and Judith Jarvis Thomson, Peter Singer and Richard Dawkins are also critiqued. Boonin still has a picture of his son as an unborn child, yet still is intellectually dubious in his arguments in defence of abortion. The argument defending abortion because we cannot know when life begins is still around today and has led to the death of over 55 million children in the USA alone.

Sterrett is clear that sanctity and natural theology should not be dismissed in the abortion debate just because they are religious terms. Arguments for God along with being and essence are visited. The author highlights that if God does not exist there are no adequate ontological reasons to affirm the existence of objective moral truths.

Sterrett defends the ideas of both Aristotle (whom we have largely forgotten about in the Western world, but had erroneous views on abortion) and Jefferson (whom he defends from the hypocrisy of owning slaves). Aristotle was brilliant in defending natural rights, virtue ethics, substance and human dignity. Aristotle’s idea of substance is still relevant for science today, and all humans should be considered persons. Today the majority of abortion supporters believe strongly in a separation between human beings and personhood. All persons are someone for who they are, and not solely for any functional purpose. Human beings deserve respect for who they are. Human babies are innocent, persons and human and therefore they should be protected and not be intentionally killed.

One of the closing chapters looks at similarities and differences on both sides of the abortion debate. Abortion advocates often use theories, while defenders of life use Aristotelean logic with premises about real life. Despite this, some abortion advocates such as Singer can see that there can be a greater purpose in some suffering, humans are responsible for what they could have prevented, that racism is wrong and that animals should be treated with respect.

A philosopher’s stance on abortion is frequently rooted in their metaphysical beliefs. Defenders of abortion prefer a functional view of what it means to be human, rejecting metaphysics and essence and existence. In this worldview, children are often viewed as inhumane parasites and pregnancy can be viewed negatively. Contemporary abortion advocates have rejected Aristotle’s metaphysics and the scholasticism of the middle ages. Aristotle and Aquinas affirmed epistemological realism and metaphysical realism. These classical truths could help progressive ethicists who are blinded in their own philosophy to be more open minded about the dignity and personhood of unborn human beings.

The book provides a whistle stop tour for many of the most important philosophical arguments surrounding ethical issues, and an engagement where comprehensive philosophical thought can be a foundation stone for the abortion debate.

Excellent guide to metaphysics and abortion

Abortion is always a controversial issue in this country and one aspect of it I find interesting is that the science has often been neglected. We know much more about the science of life than the ancients did back then. Oh they knew the basics fully well. They knew exactly what it took to make a baby, but what exactly was going on in the whole process and when it was that life began was not a question they could answer definitively. For this, we can be grateful to modern science showing us that life does begin at conception.

What the ancients did have an advantage in is metaphysics. The ancients knew less than we do today, but in all honesty, they thought more. Did that mean they were right about everything? Of course not. That would be ridiculous. But it meant they looked at the world around them and looked a lot deeper than just the surface level. Unfortunately, our scientific age has often become so fascinated with the science that we haven’t looked past it to deeper truths.

One such thinker that looked deep in the past was Aristotle and he was a tremendous influence on our civilization and still is. I’d agree with thinkers like Feser that where we went off the bend was when we started moving away from Aristotle. To go to Aristotle also does not mean we jettison modern science. We can still have the metaphysics of Aristotle and still keep modern science, and that metaphysics could help with the abortion debate.

In fact, that’s what Dave Sterrett argues. He argues that our aborting of the thought of Aristotle is causing us to not think properly on the abortion debate and we have to return to metaphysics. Pro-Life organizations have realized this as well, hence a question that you’d get from someone like Greg Koukl or Scott Klusendorf. That would be the question of “What is it?” That is the first question to ask in the abortion debate. What is it we are aborting?

Sterrett argues that a return to the metaphysics of Aristotle can answer that question and throughout the book, there is no doubt that he has done his homework as he profusely quotes the other side throughout. Sterrett will guide you through Aristotelian thought on this issue and help you see how it works out and also expose the fallacies that go on the other side where metaphysics is often ignored. (Indeed, too many in our society think that anything that has to do with metaphysics is automatically bunk.)

Also, this book is fairly short. I read it over Christmas break visiting my in-laws. If you want to get a good book on metaphysical issues that will help you out in the abortion debate, then Sterrett’s book is an excellent one to get, and hopefully you will be one to help us stop the abortion of Aristotle in today’s society. Who knows how much could be improved if the metaphysics of Aristotle were allowed to be reborn today?

In ten short chapters, the reader will walk away with a deep fountain of information that reaches both the heart and the mind. ONE OF RUSSELL'S FIRST BOOKS ON POLITICS, WRITTEN DURING WWI

Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970) was an influential British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and political activist. In 1950, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of his many books such as A History of Western Philosophy, The Problems of Philosophy, The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, The Analysis of Mind, Our Knowledge of the External World, Human Knowledge: Its Scope and Limits, Mysticism and Logic, etc.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 1917 book, "Political ideals must be based upon ideals for the individual life. The aim of politics should be to make the lives of individuals as good as possible. There is nothing for the politician to consider outside or above the various men, women, and children who compose the world. The problem of politics is to adjust the relations of human beings in such a way that each severally may have as much of good in his existence as possible. And this problem requires that we should first consider what it is that we think good in the individual life." (Pg. 4)

He adds, "Those who realize the harm that can be done to others by any use of force against them, and the trustworthiness of the goods that can be acquired by force, will be very full of respect for the liberty of others; they will not try to bind them or fetter them; they will be slow to judge and swift to sympathize; they will treat every human being with a kind of tenderness, because the principle of good in him is at once fragile and infinitely precious. They will not condemn those who are unlike themselves; they will know and feel that individuality brings differences and uniformity means death. They will wish each human being to be as much a living thing and as little a mechanical product as it is possible to be; they will cherish in each one just those things which the harsh usage of a ruthless world would destroy. In one word, all their dealings with others will be inspired by a deep impulse of REVERENCE." (Pg. 13)

He further says, "It is a sad evidence of the weariness mankind has suffered from excessive toil that his heavens have usually been places where nothing ever happened or changed. Fatigue produces the illusion that only rest is needed for happiness; but when men have rested for a time, boredom drives them to renewed activity." (Pg. 23)

He points out, "There is probably one purpose, and only one, for which the use of force by a government is beneficent, and that is to diminish the total amount of force used in the world. It is clear, for example, that the legal prohibition of murder diminishes the total amount of violence in the world." (Pg. 29) He adds, "Democracy is a device---the best so far invented---for diminishing as much as possible the interference of governments with liberty." (Pg. 30)

In the chapter on Capitalism, he wrote, "We may distinguish four purposes at which an economic system may aim: first, it may aim at the greatest possible production of goods and at facilitating technical progress; second, it may aim at securing distributive justice; third, it may aim at giving security against destitution; and, fourth, it may aim at liberating creative impulses and diminishing possessive impulses... Our present system fails in all purposes. It is chiefly defended on the ground that it achieves the first of the four purposes, namely, the greatest possible production of material goods, but it only does this in a very short-sighted way, by methods which are wasteful in the long run both of human material and or natural resources." (Pg. 43-44)

He suggests, "Economic justice is perhaps the most obvious evil of our present system. It would be utterly absurd to maintain that the men who inherit great wealth deserve better of the community than those who have to work for their living. I am not prepared to maintain that economic justice requires an exactly equal income for everybody. Some kinds of work require a larger income for efficiency than others do; but there is economic injustice as soon as a man has more than his share, unless it is because his efficiency in his work requires it, or as a reward for some definite service." (Pg. 48-49)

He observes, "The most dangerous aspect of the tyranny of the employer is the power which it gives him of interfering with men's activities outside their working hours. A man may be dismissed because the employer dislikes his religion or his politics, or chooses to think his private life immoral... Such cases actually occur at present. This evil would not be remedied, but rather intensified, under state socialism, because, where the State is the only employer, there is no refuge from its prejudices such as may now accidentally arise through the differing opinions of different men." (Pg. 54-55)

In the chapter on "Pitfalls of Socialism," he states, "One of the sources of evil in modern large democracies is the fact that most of the electorate have no direct or vital interest in most of the questions that arise... Should gypsies be compelled to abandon their nomadic life at the bidding of the education authorities? ... Should Christian Scientists be compelled to call in doctors in case of serious illness? These are matter of passionate interest to certain sections of the community, but of very little interest to the great majority. If they are decided according to the wishes of the numerical majority, the intense desires of a minority will be overborne by the very slight and uninformed whims of the indifferent remainder." (Pg. 90-91)

In the chapter on "Individual Liberty," he acknowledges, "Religion, to begin with, is recognized as a matter in which the state ought not to interfere. Whether a man is Christian, Mahometan, or Jew is a question of no public concern, so long as he obeys the laws; and the laws ought to be such as men of all religions can obey. Yet even here there are limits. No civilized nation would tolerate a religion demanding human sacrifice. The English in India put an end to suttee, in spite of a fixed principle of non-interference with native religious customs... We cannot EFFECTIVELY doubt that such practices ought to be stopped, however we may theorize in favor of religious liberty." (Pg. 110)

In the chapter on "National Independence," he says, "What constitutes a nation is a sentiment and an instinct, a sentiment of similarity and an instinct of belonging to the same group or herd. The instinct if an extension of the instinct which constitutes a flock of sheep, or any other group of gregarious animals. The sentiment which goes with this is like a milder and more extended form of family feeling. When we return to England after being on the Continent, we feel something friendly in the familiar ways, and it is easy to believe that Englishmen on the whole are virtuous, while many foreigners are full of designing wickedness." (Pg. 148)

This book was written during Russell's early period of political activism (including pacifism, and opposition to the First World War, for which he was imprisoned), and it reflects his ideals of time. It is particularly helpful for studying the development of his political philosophy.

Each individual has an opinion about that which he sees, and thus that individual has his own "slant" that he considers to be correct. The opinion of one man can either be in agreement with the writer, or holding fast to his own view. I find myself in diametric opposition to Russell on his "Stand on God" because I have great faith in an All Powerful Creator. However The firmness of our convictions cannot prove or disprove the intangible nature of the Infinite, of which, neither has a complete "Picture". Each must search diligently through whatever evidence is presenting itself and, in turn, pass on an incomplete picture to the next generation. Until the quest has completed we must continue to search, compelled by the curious nature of man, to Seek Truth and do our best to determine correctness of our limited understanding.

Russell continues his push for a global perspective that will take something beyond Capitalism to achieve in his view. Russell struggles through the arguments for and against different flavors of Socialism as he struggles to find an Economic system with moe equality.

Insightful Thoughts Even Valueable Today

Russell explained in depth the power balance in China among British, French, Russia, US, Germany, and Japan in the late 19th century and early 20th century. As a peace lover, Russell disgusted at the Japanese invasion and control in China. He was able to explain the root cause of the Japanese aggression using the Race, Culture, Religion, and Industry development factors. As he stated the Chinese culture could not incubate aggression as contrary to the Japanese culture. Since the Far East culture root is deep and usually carries along for centuries, I believe his view still holds true in the 21st century. This book also explained the possibility of a 'Red China' in 1922. Because Russia was a traditional enemy of Japan in the Far East, Russell thought Russia would have a huge impact on 'Young China' because "one's enemy's enemy is usually a friend". I was so much impressed by Russell's social analysis and insightful thought on China. I wish he were still alive today so he could educate the Westerns about who is the true peace loving people in the Far East.

Bertrand Russell gives an in-depth account and analysis of the problems faced by China during the early 20th century. While analyzing the dynamics at play on the global front, he also attempts to identify the three most pressing issues which China faced internally--the need for an orderly government, industrial development under Chinese control and the spread of education. Notwithstanding the fact that he is a Westerner, he strives to debunk myths and prevailing misconceptions of the Chinese people. Russell writes elegantly and this book is indeed a remarkable account for those who wish to learn more about China.

In this book, Bertrand Russell expressed his ideas about both the positive and negative characters of Chinese. It can only be written after carefully thinking over what are in Chinese people's mind. And only you have been to China for over 6 months can you really understand what he really means. This is perhaps the best book for western people to learn the way of thinking of Chinese and the character of the Chinese people. After reading the book I think people will rebuild an idea about China, thus they can understand the Chinese people in American better.

Amazing value for so little money! Something for everyone in here!

This box set is really amazing. Any one of these books would be a great deal on their own. However, when you combine them together, this is an outright steal! Eric does a fantastic job of putting together a huge collection of delicious recipes. They aren't hard at all to make and his instructions are easy to follow.

I personally love pressure cookers and my favorites from the books include spicy ribs and even salmon steaks. The book on dump dinners is wonderful for really saving time and eating healthy. The hardest part is knowing which of the many recipes to start with. This was a real home run for cookbooks. With this one, you don't need any more cook books!

Excellent!

This is the perfect product for the modern person on the go. Not many people have the time to cook full delicious meals with their schedules, but with this they are able to do it in much less time! I used work 9 hours a day, go to the gym, cook, and try to spend some time unwinding or talking with friends before bed. That caused me to be constantly going to bed late and getting little sleep. Then, I found this book, bought a pressure cooker, and my meals have been more tasty and in half the time! I've been able to go to bed early and have more energy. There are so many delicious recipes I never get bored! Plus, the ladies love a man who can cook!

Insightful, inspirational and very engaging

Some may look at author Kathleen Bush's new book, "The Golden Way" and think "oh, another self help book just like the others." That would be a mistake. I pick up many of these books, only to put them down soon after starting them and this one hooked me early on with author's engaging writing and personal stories that I could easily relate to. With some incredible insight about such things as love, forgiveness, and universal principles, I found a lot of inspiration in both the explanations and the author's stories. I also really enjoyed the discussion of twelve step recovery as this is something else that I could relate to. A very worthwhile read.

Kobi Shashoua wrote a brief, but regular book, for defense of Israel

Here in Brazil, I read on my kindle, this regular book, writen by Jew and Israeli Kobi Shashoua.
This book has these main qualities:
1- This book is short and well organized.
2- Kobi Shashoua really knows that psychological war is very important. He also knows that Israel is losting the psychological war since many years ago.
3- This book has these sentences: "Now you tell me how is it possible that "the desicable Zionist occupying army," with its "hot-tempered and bloodthristy" sodiers, volunteered to rescue missions thousands of miles away from their home, while the armies of the Arab countries chose not to help, not to assist and not to lift a finger in view of the disasters that befell our small universe."
4- This book has these sentences: "Yes, this is the world we live in: terrorist organizations are called freedom organizations, terrorists are called Peace activists, and radical agressive organizations are called human rights organizations."
5- This book has these two paragraphs: "When you imagine Brazil, you don't think about poverty and the exploitation of children, only about the golden beaches of Copacabana. When you imagine China you don't hink about torture, false arrests and dictatorship. You imagine visits to the Great Wall of China.
But when you imagine Israel, its enemies don't want you to imagine the lights of Jerusalem, the golden beaches, the technological developments, the principles of morality and justice. They want you imagine a nation that commits war crimes! This is the essence of de-legitimization! "
Even recognazing the good will and the reasonable effort, I have to give three stars for this book, because of these main problems:
1- Reading the profile of Kobi Shashoua, I read that he worked on CIA and studied on University of Tel Aviv, more exactly on the Recanati School of Business. With this profile, Kobi Shashoua made just a regular work in defense of Israel.
2- I was born in 1970. When I was just 11 years old in 1982. Even so young, I was and remain a supporter of Israel. Then, Israel was doing a war on the Lebanon, I could realize that even in 1982, Israel had lost the psychological warfare, even winning the war in the battlefield. This bad fact came to become far worse since that times.
3- The author, a Jew and Israeli hasn't any spaces for the mistakes of Israel. For instance. Israel pulled out from South Lebanon conflict (1985–2000). It did not because South Lebanon Army was expensive for Israel or because it was defeated in the battle field by Hezbollah, Amal, PLO, etc. Ehud Barak’s Labor Party pledged during his March 1999 election campaign for Prime Minister to withdraw Israeli troops from Lebanon in 2000. He did this. Since then, Hezbollah became the biggest political force on the Lebanon and has complete domination to the South of Lebanon. Later, in 2005, Ariel Sharon (1928 – 2014) ordered the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, and the dismantling of all Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip. Since that time, Hamas has Gaza under its complete control. In a simple sentence. Israeli when militaries wins, but when they became voters, they chose their defeat on the psychological war. .As I wrote years ago, on my review of the book "90 Minutes at Entebbe" by William Stevenson , these sentences: "Never any terrorist organization ever defeated any army. Even small armies have defeated "powerfull" terrorist organizations, in military therms. Uruguayan Army defeated the so called "Tupamaros", in the first years of 1970 decade. But terrorism is more than 99% politics against less than 1% real fight. Yes, in 1970 decade, the small and weak Uruguayan Army defeated the so called "Tupamaros", a Marxist terrorist group, but today Uruguayan president is himself a "former" Tupamaro. Hundreds of Uruguayan militaries or policemen are in jails today. After all, the so called "Tupamaros" won the fight in political and psicological war in Uruguay. In Argentina, in 1976, Videla defeated only militarly, in a few months, the World's two biggests urban guerrillas of 1970 decade: the Montoneros and ERP in Argentina. Politically, as in the case of Uruguay, Brazil, etc. "military victory" was doomed, by political victory of the former "terrorists" becoming powerfull and very corrupt politicians. Yes, in Argentina Videla defeated (only militarly) Montoneros and ERP, in a few months, the two biggests urban guerrillas in all the world, in 1970 decade. But today, Videla is serving dozens of life in prision sentences and Argentina is under the government of a "former Montonera" Cristina Kirchner. Thousands of Argentine militaries and policemen are in jails, while not a single Montonero or Erpista is in jail for his crimes at these same times." The psychological warfare took time, but as in Latin América, Israeli people was decieved by Yasser Arafat and his fake "peace" that never came.
4- The war between Israel and PLO, Hezbollah, Hamas, etc. isn't described in this book as it really is: a religious war. Islam makes war against not Islamics, an obligation. Muhhamad himself take his last decades of life to make wars to impose Islam to other Arabs. Islamics don't want a part of Jerusalem; they want all of Israel and later all the world to become something such as Iran or Syria are today. Kobi Shashoua just didn't wrote that Islam itself can't make any real peace with not Islamics. To Islam, there's no real peace. There's the "hudna". When Islam is under a force bigger than itself, Islamics can make a fake "peace" with not Islamics and call this fake peace, a hudna. Then, when there's will, Islamics must return to the Jihad and exterminate, enslave, etc. not Islamics.
In a sentence. I have to give just three stars, for this short book, because Kobi Shashoua wrote a brief, but regular book, for defense of Israel.

When a vicious lie is told and re-told, it must be countered with the facts. In this brief volume, the author have presented facts that cannot be disputed by any reasonable, open-minded person. The author draw on the historical record to refute the charges that Israel army is racist, oppressive, or guilty of war crimes, and therefore somehow deserving of pariah status. What other army in the world is so careful to avoid civilian casualties, that they telephone the residences of a building holding rockets and other weapons to let them know an attack is imminent? It is nothing less than a continuation of the Arab war on Israel, carried out by non-military means. Unfortunately, too many people have bought in to the lie, with their minds and their pocketbooks. That’s why this book is a must-read for anyone who wishes to understand the truth!
