Slow Cooker + Traditional Mexican Dishes = YUMMY
By Organic Reviews
Did you know that there is a difference between a Crock Pot and a Slow Cooker? I had no idea and thought they were the same thing. Nope! A Crock Pot is a the brand name for a slow cooker and a slow cook is just that. This books not only contains recipes but it is also loaded with tips like these that makes the read informative and educational.

Honestly, before this book, I knew a handful of slow cooker recipes. I desired to utilize my slow cooker more often but was ignorant on the topic and hence.....the purpose for book. Fall has arrived and I want to not only broaden slow cooking repertoire, but I want to basically wanted more "set in and forget it" dinners.

This book is divided into chapters:

Chapter 1- This ins and outs of slow cooking and how to use the slow cooker properly.

Chapter 2: Mexican cooking and what are the staples to have on hand

Chapter 3-9: Recipes that include soups, appetizers, main dishes, salsa, vegetarian dishes, seafood, desserts

This is a great book if you want to 1. utilize your slow cooker and 2. with flavorful Mexican dishes. It is filled with beautiful pictures that are inspiring and have given me the tools to feel confident making tradition Mexican dishes. Highly recommend!

Yummy Recipes!
By Lindsie
Oh. My. Gosh. To say I love this cookbook would be an understatement! Often when I review a cook book I may use one or two recipes to give it a try, may even go back to them to use again. Just as frequently I shelve a book and don’t go back to it where it lingers collecting dust and irritating my conscience because I’m just not that into it but can’t part with it. This book was a whooooole ‘nother story! If you love Mexican food, have a crock pot and need an excuse to mix up a batch of margaritas then this one is a no brainer. Go. Get. This. Book. Seriously. Now. This cook book is so easy to use, beautifully designed and one I highly recommend (in case you hadn’t picked up on that.) I have a lot of great books lying around collecting dust and hurt feelings but this one is seldom off my counter. Pretty sure I heard it sigh one time and mention something about a headache but I put it to work anyway.

I seriously love mexican food
By lyn
I seriously love mexican food, and up until now only knew how to make a handful of recipes in my slow cooker with a Mexican inspiration. Not only can I make more now, but they're so delicious. Every recipe I have made in here, is a hit. They're easy to follow. With detailed directions. I can sub anything out too, which is really nice. This book is great for any lazy mexican food lovers like myself. (Or as I like to put it, a busy mom)

America's First Cuisines, by Sophie D. Coe

After long weeks of boring, perhaps spoiled sea rations, one of the first things Spaniards sought in the New World was undoubtedly fresh food. Probably they found the local cuisine strange at first, but soon they were sending American plants and animals around the world, eventually enriching the cuisine of many cultures.

Drawing on original accounts by Europeans and native Americans, this pioneering work offers the first detailed description of the cuisines of the Aztecs, the Maya, and the Inca. Sophie Coe begins with the basic foodstuffs, including maize, potatoes, beans, peanuts, squash, avocados, tomatoes, chocolate, and chiles, and explores their early history and domestication. She then describes how these foods were prepared, served, and preserved, giving many insights into the cultural and ritual practices that surrounded eating in these cultures. Coe also points out the similarities and differences among the three cuisines and compares them to Spanish cooking of the period, which, as she usefully reminds us, would seem as foreign to our tastes as the American foods seemed to theirs. Written in easily digested prose, America's First Cuisines will appeal to food enthusiasts as well as scholars.

Review
Sophie Coe, anthropologist and culinary historian, gives us a cook's tour of the nuclear areas of New World civilization. Her book is a botanically, zoologically, and nutritionally informed synthesis of information on the New World's contribution to the world's inventory of foodstuffs and, most importantly, on how the use of these foodstuffs coalesced in the culinary cultures of the Aztec, Maya, and Inca. It is the first work of its kind on the past civilizations of the New World. . . . This book is essential reading for Americanist anthropologists as well as scholars in a variety of other disciplines, and it constitutes serious pleasure reading for lay readers who are cooks, eaters, and students of foodways. (American Anthropologist 1995-09-01)

Provides tantalizing snapshots of Native American cuisine and culture, especially at the first intersection with the Europeans. . . . It must not be missed by anyone professing a serious interest in America's cuisines for scientific or gustatory reasons. . . . Appropriate for any interested reader as well as for the academic consumer, this volume presents a wealth of excellent information and is a marvelous read. (Nahua Newsletter 1995-11-01)

Hardly anyone who works with food history can afford to skip reading the New World staples and produce chapters, and once started on the book, won't want to stop anyway. Coe's story of the early New World civilizations and their encounters with Europeans is extraordinarily readable, interwoven with descriptions of food, how it was prepared and served, its significance to the people who ate it. Coe treats the New World people respectfully and with dignity, and at times the narrative is unbearably sad as it describes their conquest by the Spanish. (S. L. Oliver Food History News 1994-01-00)

Sophie Coe . . . was as rare in our time as her hero, Bernardino Sahagún, was in his: a culinary anthropologist who gave equal weight to both parts of that phrase.... However, despite the strong culinary thrust of the text, the 'discovery' of New World foods is an aspect of her story that—although extensively discussed—becomes. finally, almost beside the point. Her real subject is the tragic collision of two worldviews perhaps least likely to understand, let alone appreciate, each other. If mestizo culture remains as volatile and potent as a vinaigrette, it is because, even today, the two continue to coexist less like water and chocolate than oil and vinegar. (Cook Book 1994-09-00)

the history of my favorite foods!
By AK
This book is one of my favorites in recent years. I have become interested in the history of foods and Sophie Coe was an incredible scholar. Her books are great reading and amusing. Unfortunately she is no longer with us but she has left us with two wonderful books on the foods of the Americas (The True History of Chocolate--finished by her husband Michael Coe, another great writer of history. I highly reccommend this one as well).

What the Indians Ate
By Smallchief
The list of food products discovered or created by the American Indians seems endless: corn, manioc (cassava, yuka, or tapioca) squash, beans, chocolate, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, pineapples, avocados, vanilla, and chile peppers -- plus for your Thanksgiving table, turkey, and for your wicked moments, tobacco, coca, and magic mushrooms. Conversely, there's been very little written about pre-Columbian cusine. Coe's book fills this lacunae.

The Spanish destroyed every aspect of Indian culture they could but enough accounts of Indian food were recorded to partially construct what they ate. Coe focuses on the food of the three main civilizations in the Americas at the time of Columbus: the Aztecs, Mayas, and Incas. A lot more information survived about the food of the Aztecs than the other two.

Working with fragmentary information Coe has reconstructed the cuisines of these civilizations -- and rich indeed were the foods they ate -- dozens of variations of tortillas and tamales, a heavy reliance on chiles, innumerable varieties of potatoes, and a huge variety of chocolate dishes that seem ripe for the exploration by culinary adventurers, entrepreneurs, and writers of cook books. The notion, often advanced, that the pre-Columbian diet was boring, primitive, or deficient is refuted persuasively here.

The book suffers a bit from being an overly broad summary that left me hungry (groan!!!) for more information about many foods only barely mentioned. There's plenty of material here for additional books and questions to be answered. To echo an earlier reviewer: what did the Italians eat before the tomato amd the Irish before the potato?

Interesting Historical Book On Mayan, Incan, and Aztec Cuisine
By S. Linkletter
I was able to read this book steadily from beginning to end, which is unusual for me with a book of historical nature. So often such books are dry recitals of names and dates, interspersed with quotes from a myriad of past authors which sometimes seem to my way of thinking to be almost randomly placed in the text in order to have it be said they were quoted. This book does include quotes with their sources, but they support the text rather than supplant it. The information that I wanted to learn is presented in an orderly fashion, for each of the three cultures. The supporting quotes appear in their appropriate places along with the author's opinion of their possible biases. The text includes factual descriptions that excite the imagination without actually entering the realm of fiction. At the end of the book I felt satisfied. I feel no need to seek another book on this subject. This book also gave me enough general background on cultural cuisines to enable me to evaluate similar books about other ancient cultures. I guess in summary I would have to say that by my perception this author wants to engage the reader's interest in a subject about which she is enthusiastic, and teach the reader accurately what can be learned on that subject. In my case, her book succeeded admirably at both things.

The Golden Age Shtetl: A New History of Jewish Life in East Europe, by Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern

The shtetl was home to two-thirds of East Europe's Jews in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, yet it has long been one of the most neglected and misunderstood chapters of the Jewish experience. This book provides the first grassroots social, economic, and cultural history of the shtetl. Challenging popular misconceptions of the shtetl as an isolated, ramshackle Jewish village stricken by poverty and pogroms, Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern argues that, in its heyday from the 1790s to the 1840s, the shtetl was a thriving Jewish community as vibrant as any in Europe.

Petrovsky-Shtern brings this golden age to life, looking at dozens of shtetls and drawing on a wealth of never-before-used archival material. Illustrated throughout with rare archival photographs and artwork, this nuanced history casts the shtetl in an altogether new light, revealing how its golden age continues to shape the collective memory of the Jewish people today.

Winner of the 2014 National Jewish Book Award in History (Gerrard and Ella Berman Memorial Award), Jewish Book Council

Honorable Mention for the 2015 PROSE Award in European & World History, Association of American Publishers

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2015

"Petrovsky-Shtern . . . succeeds in vividly evoking a Jewish world that survived not merely in spite of its neighbors but in complex collaboration with them. . . . [A] moving feat of cultural reclamation and even, in its way, an act of quiet heroism."--Jonathan Rosen, New York Times Book Review

"[The Golden Age Shtetl] is a colorful, exhaustively researched study of a period when Jews were fully at home in shtetl life."--Publishers Weekly

"Petrovsky-Shtern turns some of the received knowledge about Jewish history on its head as he delves into rich, formerly classified primary sources delineating the evidence of Jewish economic power during the transition between the partitions of Poland by Russia (1772-1775) and the advent of the Russian military age, beginning in the 1840s, which brought xenophobia and nationalism. . . . Petrovsky-Shtern's book is lively and entertaining. A welcome study that is by turns picturesque and scholarly, startling and accessible."--Kirkus

"Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern . . . has written a work that should be required reading for all those interested in, perplexed by or driven to madness by this subject. The produce of prodigious archival research, primary source materials and mastery of numerous languages, The Golden Age Shtetl tells a history that has rarely been transmitted in scholarly books, around the dinner table or even in Yiddish literature."--Jonathan Brent, Moment Magazine

"[T]he author's 15 years of research, 355 pages of lively writing and archival photos more than achieve his goal of recreating 'a three-dimensional, colorful and picturesque shtetl.'"--Neal Gendler, American Jewish World

"If earlier accounts of the shtetl, such as Zborowski's Life Is With People, described it as 'not a place but a state of mind,' then Petrovsky-Shtern's work restores a physicality or material reality to the shtetl. Here are a series of locations with a real history, as opposed to a 'timeless existence.' And, along with other modern historians, Petrovsky-Shtern gives us a context to understand the places where many of our grandparents and great-grandparents came from."--Aaron Howard, Jewish Herald Voice

"The vibrancy of shtetl life in the days before it was destroyed by the Russian state comes through vividly. This book should appeal to anyone interested in Jewish or Eastern European history."--Frederic Krome, Library Journal

"In The Golden Age Shtetl, Petrovsky-Shtern draws on thousands of previously classified archival sources from six countries, in seven languages, to provide a vivid account of life in the villages and towns that came to be called shtetls. . . . The author makes a compelling case that between 1790 and 1840, the shtetl was a far different place from its late-19th-century successor, which is now universally associated with poverty and pogroms."--Glenn C. Altschuler, Jerusalem Post

"[T]he amount of detail Petrovsky-Shtern uncovered is amazing. . . . The book's combination of history and anthropology worked extremely well. . . . Petrovsky-Shtern has produced something new and original. Anyone interested in the history of Eastern European Jews would do well to pick up a copy."--Rabbi Rachel Esserman, Reporter (Binghamton)

"[H]ighly readable and rich with observed detail. . . . Petrovsky-Shtern gives us something even more precious--a glimpse of the shtetl at its moment of greatest glory."--Jonathan Kirsch, Jewish Journal

"Using a wide variety of archival sources, Perovsky-Shtern not only stakes his claim to what the shtetl is (at least during the historical period he calls the 'golden age of the shtetl,' roughly the first half of the 19th century), but also brings it to glorious, colorful life."--Jeremy Dauber, Commentary

"The Golden Age Shtetl is a fascinating and informative book and Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern has made it thoroughly readable, while still maintaining its academic veracity, by selecting some wonderful examples to illustrate his story of a period which, he claims, was indeed a Golden Age for Jews in the area he focuses on. His anecdotes, drawn from court records, state archives, and other sources, are always relevant."--Jim Burns, Northern Review of Books

"In a tour de force of archival research, Petrovsky-Shtern re-creates life in the shtetls in all its amazing richness."--Foreign Affairs

"The Golden Age Shtetl should . . . fascinate the curious lay readers and scholarly specialist alike. Its strength is that it neither romanticizes nor vilifies the shtetl, and conforms to no ideological agenda; instead, shtetl Jews emerge from its numerous anecdotes as simply and deeply human."--Andrew N. Koss, Mosaic Magazine

"Petrovsky-Shtern's chapters on the vital economies of smuggling and alcohol production and distribution, and on the use of violence in shtetl society and Jewish crime and Russian justice, are full of mesmerizing stories and are gratifying to all who have long suspected that there was something not quite right with the conventional portrayal of the shtetl Jews as sheep. Where there are sheep there are wolves, and Petrovsky-Shtern shows that plenty of the wolves were Jewish. . . . [A] hugely entertaining, informative work."--Susanne Klingenstein, Weekly Standard

"Without a hint of nostalgia or bittersweet yearning, The Golden Age Shtetl conjures a place and time that most of us didn't even know we'd lost."--Norman Ravvin, Canadian Jewish News

"This highly entertaining and often surprising volume recasts our understanding of the contexts of Jewish life in Eastern Europe."--Francois Guesnet, History Today

"Anyone interested in Eastern European History and the shtetl will be fascinated by this lively book that is as accessible to the general reader as it is valuable to the academic."--David Tesler, Association of Jewish Libraries

"Exuberant and revolutionary, founded on extensive archival scholarship in multiple languages, this book is fundamental for understanding the authentic significance of the predominately Jewish market towns known in Yiddish as shtetls, which once dotted the map of Eastern Europe. . . . The book is colorfully written and documented with mordant humor and cynical humanism. Reading this book reveals the vibrant heart of Eastern European Jewish civilization, whose traces can still be seen among the descendants of millions of Eastern European Jewish immigrants, compelled to leave by the economic decline resulting from czarist Russian policies. An outstanding work of scholarship about the fabric of life in a multiethnic region."--Choice

"The Golden Age Shtetl is a gem of a book; it is beautifully written, informative, approachable, funny and deserves to be very widely read."--Charles H. Middleburgh, Charles Middleburgh blog

"The text is fluently written; the author maintains the balance between vibrant, almost anecdotal narration and solid methodology relying on the numbers derived from historical sources. As a result, the book is exceptionally colourful - not only due to the richness and vividness of the stories contained within but also because of its visual aspect."--Wojciech Kosior, The Polish Journal of the Arts and Culture

"The Golden Age Shtetl substantially enriches our understanding of both the Eastern European small town and Jewish daily life in the early nineteenth century. Mining a treasure trove of previously unused archival data, Petrovsky-Shtern brings to life a culture normally depicted only in its decline."--Jeffrey Veidlinger, Journal of Modern History

"Aligned throughout with rare archival photographs and artwork, this more than nuanced history casts theshtetl itself in an altogether new light; revealing how its influential golden age continues to shape the collective memory of Jewish people to the present day."--David Marx Book Reviews

"Groundbreaking."--Claire Le Foll, Journal of Jewish Studies

From the Back Cover

"This book ushers in the golden age of shtetl scholarship. Challenging the homogenized and sanitized images of East European Jewry that followed its near obliteration, Petrovsky-Shtern combs the archives to reveal how the Jews who lived in these market towns enjoyed great opportunities amid the political tensions between Poland and Russia. A book to be grateful for."--Ruth R. Wisse, author of No Joke: Making Jewish Humor

"The Golden Age Shtetl turns upside down the nostalgic image of the shtetl as a decaying Jewish village, presenting the historical shtetl as a place where Jews enjoyed prosperity and stability. Drawing on huge archival evidence, this pathbreaking study challenges our historical mind and provides an innovative account of the Jewish experience in nineteenth-century Russia."--Israel Bartal, author of The Jews of Eastern Europe, 1772-1881

"The shtetl, home of most East European Jews for several centuries, has been the subject of endless romantic re-creations in the American Jewish corpus. Finally a serious historian of Russian Jewry gives us a well-documented but still lively and fascinating picture of this lost world. A must-read for anyone seeking to understand the immediate Jewish past."--Art Green, Brandeis University and Hebrew College

"An inspiring and rich study. In this highly innovative book, Petrovsky-Shtern demonstrates how the shtetl in early nineteenth-century Russia constituted a unique context for the unfolding of a proud, resilient, and sustainable Jewish community."--François Guesnet, University College London

"The shtetl comes to life in all its complexity, vitality, and beauty in Petrovsky-Shtern's new book. Like an archaeologist who uncovers and brings to light one layer after another of a long-gone civilization, he draws on previously untapped archival sources to reconstruct a crucial part of Jewish history."--Serhii Plokhy, Harvard University

Fascinating, fun and highly informative
By arlene alpert
Prof Petrovsky-Shtern's latest book is a must read for any student of Jewish history...It is meticulously and sometimes even cleverly researched, such as when the author had to disguise himself to unearth archives and documents.. Readers will enjoy the many anecdotes about everyday life in the shtetl. These clearly illustrate the author's thesis about shtetl life not being a dreary one of poverty, depression and fear of persecution..Indeed, shtetl life is brought so alive that one can almost feel (s)he is a neighbor of the persons quoted on the pages....Prof Petrovsky Shtern puts forth powerful arguments which validate the theses in his preface..One comes away full of admiration for the shtetl dwellers who are depicted as having both creativity and the resourcefulness needed to meet the many hardships and challenges of daily life.. Readers will come away enriched in their understanding and appreciation of shtetl dwellers and the socioeconomic and political context in which they lived. I was sorry when the book ended as I was so immersed while reading it..My reading on this topic will continue thanks to the superb footnotes and bibliography provided. I recommend this delightful book to both the casual reader as well as to those with more scholarly credentials. It deserves a place on your bookshelf and makes an excellent gift as well. Sort Of
By Crusty Critic
According to Petrovsky-Shtern (P-T), in the 50-year period from about 1790-1840, the shtetl communities in areas of Poland/Ukraine taken over by Russia were not that of "Fiddler on the Roof" (small, poor, full of just Jews, oppressed, and hapless) but vibrant, diverse communities with booming economies. While he sort of proves his thesis, his wandering account and poor writing makes it difficult to extract a clear picture, since he seems, among other things, to be extremely anxious to prove another thesis, and spends an inordinate amount of time on it, that Russian policy destroyed this golden age shtetl. And in both cases, P-T uses an awkward sort of case study (actually simply very short extracts from official records) to prove his points, ending up sounding like notes for a book rather than a reasoned argument.

The book would have been much better if it was organized into two sections, the first portraying the golden age and its characteristics, in which Jews could often be successful, profane, powerful, and aggressive in regard to other Jews and their Polish and Russian neighbors, and the second showing how Russian policy used the Jews as scapegoats to build up their power in order to bring down the Polish landlords and peasants. But then, that would have required a different person to write the book.

A New Take on an Old Topic
By Leslie
Petrovsky-Shtern’s The Golden Age Shtetl, opens a treasure-trove of primary resources that only this multi-lingual and gifted history professor could translate with such rich context. He's provided so much new information to those of us interested in Eastern European Jewry. I'm grateful for this book and learned a great deal. He's also a wonderful artist and designed the cover.

A Road Is Made: Communism in Shanghai 1920-1927, by Steve Smith

This is a study of the activities, ideas and internal life of the Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai during its formative period. It investigates the party's relations to the city's students and teachers, women, entrepreneurs, secret societies and its workers, and examines the efforts to transform the CCP into a 'Leninist' party, exploring relations between intellectuals and workers, men and women, Chinese and Russians within the party. The book culminates in a detailed analysis of the three armed uprisings which led to the CCP's briefly taking power in March 1927, before being crushed by troops loyal to Chiang Kai-shek. The study highlights the extent to which the Soviet Union sought to manipulate China's national revolution, yet also reveals how divisions at every level of the Comintern allowed the CCP to achieve a degree of independence and to conduct policy at considerable variance with that laid down by Moscow.

Details, details, details.
By Blackrock
This is a magnificent compendium on the birth and early years of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It is, however, heavy reading and not meant for armchair history enthusiasts or those expecting a novelized form of history. It is strong on minute detail, not only on the birth of the party itself, but of necessity also on the Chinese labor movement, the CCP's relations with the infant Kuomintang, and anti-imperialism and the rise of Chinese nationalism. The book is a gold mine of information on a subject that has been lacking such detail in English (I should know--I wrote my Master's thesis on this subject many years ago and was pleased to see that I made no glaring errors even without access to the wonderful Russian and Chinese sources used by this author.) This volume is so encyclopedic that it serves as a reference work as well as a history. I highly recommend it for students and serious scholars of Chinese history in the 1920s, but not at all for those only generally interested in the subject.

Chan Buddhism (Dimensions of Asian Spirituality), by Peter D. Hershock

Chan Buddhism has become paradigmatic of Buddhist spirituality. Known in Japan as Zen and in Korea as Son, it is one of the most strikingly iconoclastic spiritual traditions in the world. This succinct and lively work clearly expresses the meaning of Chan as it developed in China more than a thousand years ago and provides useful insights into the distinctive aims and forms of practice associated with the tradition, including its emphasis on the unity of wisdom and practice; the reality of "sudden awakening"; the importance of meditation; the use of "shock tactics"; the centrality of the teacher-student relationship; and the celebration of enlightenment narratives, or koans.

Unlike many scholarly studies, which offer detailed perspectives on historical development, or guides for personal practice written by contemporary Buddhist teachers, this volume takes a middle path between these two approaches, weaving together both history and insight to convey to the general reader the conditions, energy, and creativity that characterize Chan. Following a survey of the birth and development of Chan, its practices and spirituality are fleshed out through stories and teachings drawn from the lives of four masters: Bodhidharma, Huineng, Mazu, and Linji. Finally, the meaning of Chan as a living spiritual tradition is addressed through a philosophical reading of its practice as the realization of wisdom, attentive mastery, and moral clarity.

One of the Best
By Michael Staples
Out of an extensive library of western philosophy and Buddhist thought this is one of my favorites. I have read some of the negative comments here and could not disagree more. You have to read this book several times to piece together Hershocks vision. But his is a vision I feel accurately explicates the poetic abstractions of Ch'an (Zen). Unlike at least one commentor, I did not find the writing to be dry, distant or confusing. I thought the writing was exemplary, to the point, and strung together a picture of Ch'an that very few others have done.

When it comes to these kind of books, there are tons of them written by very good practioners who do not have the background in western philosophy or as writers to adequately paint a lucid picture in non-poetic terms. Unravelling the poetic language of Ch'an can be a challenge, and Hershock does a masterful job of it.

I highly recommend this book.

Good Introudction to Chinese Buddhism
By John C. Marshell Jr.
This book is a general survey of Chan Buddhism written by a respected scholar. It is that simple. It is well written and easy to follow. The author uses images and analogies in relating buddhist teachings, some drawn from the buddhist tradition, others are more secular and contemporary. It is an accessible book for the general reader, though it could also be useful to those more advanced in religious studies.

With all the different "Buddhisms" out there, it was nice to find a book that stuck to the Chinese version of the tradition. So often Chinese, Japanese, and Korean forms of buddhism get lumped together. What I liked most about this book were the distinctions he presented between Indian Buddhism and Chan, making clear how they were different and why they were different. His honest accounting of the influence of Taoism and Chinese culture on a foriegn religious tradition was educating and helpful and answered many growing questions in my own study of this tradition. His discussion of the development of Buddha-nature, interdependence, creativity, and energy work--especially as they are unique to the Chan tradition--provide the reader with a good grounding in the basic teachings of the Chinese tradition. I am, however, still a little fuzzy in my thinking about karma and reincarnation, and perhaps this is an area of the book that is lacking. It is the only criticism I would offer.

If you are looking for an outstanding introduction to this subject, I would recommend this book. The University of Hawai'i Press offers many fine books on this subject. Further reading can be found there.

Like No Other
By Daniel M. Kaplan
I am rereading Peter Hershock's book Chan Buddhism for the third time. I continue to glean things I missed on previous readings. But what is encouraging, as a long time zen practitioner, is the clarity with which Mr Hershock expresses the fundamental aspects of Chan that remain true today to people practicing. Describing enlightenment as a dynamic awakening into the total interrelatedness of all being, as well as what made Chan so unique amongst the streams of buddhism that came to China, it is a book both concise, and packed with great information and insight. I recommend it to those who ask me for a book on Zen that will give them background and insight into what it is supposed to be about. I find it's a book like no other. It doesn't get you bogged down in dogma, and continually comes back to Chan as being a practice oriented stream of buddhism, an enactment practice(s), not a textually based stream of buddhism. It's unique in that in all of buddhism, even though all the schools of buddhism have always had their meditation practices.
Although Mr Hershock has written other, more scholarly books about buddhism and Chan and it's influence, THIS volume is one to come back to again and again.

Market Entry into the USA: Why European Companies Fail and How to Succeed (Management for Professionals), by Ralf Drews, Melissa Lamson

This book connects a buying psychology driven by American beliefs and values with a company’s go-to market strategy, the goal being to sensitize readers to how the cultural values of a particular country or region can impact the business environment. The book also addresses the reasons behind these differences and therefore begins with a detailed cultural comparison of the United States and Europe, and assessments of how these characteristics impact their respective markets and customer behavior differently.

Another aspect that sets this book apart is that it argues for sound decision-making processes as the first priority in any international business strategy. Readers are provided detailed insights into the variables a European company needs to understand before it makes its “go/no-go” decision, along with the tools needed to evaluate the probability of success and the risks of going to market. Once a company decides to enter the US market, the book then offers a highly customer-centric approach to developing and executing an effective market strategy.

Shortly after he joined the company he became the Project Manager for an R&D Project in the US Airforce. From 2000 to 2008, Mr. Drews was responsible for all global R&D locations, one being in Pittsburgh. Between 2008 and 2012 Mr. Drews has been the CEO and President of Drager Safety in North America. In this role he was responsible for a 120 Mio Dollar business in the US and Canada. Mr. Drews main focus was the development and execution of a strategy which would leverage the strengths of a German technology company and at the same time consider the specific needs and barriers of the US and Canadian Market. During his tenure in North America Mr. Drews and his team were able to grow sales and EBIT (earnings before income and tax) significantly due a new and powerful go-to market strategy. Key to this success was to understand the buying habits of North Americans versus Europeans and the translation of this knowledge into a solid company strategy.

Mr. Drews was also member of the Global Management Team of Drager Safety and had great insights into the Asian and European Markets.

The book effectively debunks the myth that cultural knowledge is 'soft knowledge'.
By Jeremy
The book effectively debunks the myth that cultural knowledge is 'soft knowledge', rather than a critical tool for market success. The book explains key elements of a strong strategy and the practical tools to implement it. For instance, how to analyze the Value Proposition of your company before it enters the US market. This is a must read for businesses who want to crack the US market.

Goles y autogoles: Historia política del fútbol chileno (Spanish Edition), by Daniel Matamala
